Reds are letting Rafa down - Murphy

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has cast a gloomy eye over the Anfield club’s title hopes, insisting Rafa Benitez is not getting the backing he deserves.

Murphy, now of Fulham, holds Liverpool extremely dear to his heart having represented his boyhood club for seven successful years.

The 31-year-old midfielder is worried that close friend Steven Gerrard is being restricted by his current role behind Fernando Torres, a situation Murphy hopes will be resolved by the signing of Robbie Keane.

“Last season Steven played just behind Torres, but even if he can adapt to that role, you lose something from the centre of midfield when you take him out,” the 31-year-olf told The Sunday Mirror.

“He has an all-round game. Not only can he score goals, but he can defend and he can tackle. He has to be one of the best two or three in the world in that role.

“To put him back in midfield you have to get someone who can compliment Torres. Robbie Keane is a rumour, and he would be a tremendous signing. He will score goals and make goals for Torres.”

Even if Keane does arrive, as it appears he will do, Murphy fears Liverpool will still lack the necessary flair out wide to sustain a title challenge unless Benitez is given better financial backing.

“You can ask if the players in the wide areas are good enough compared to the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, who have Cristiano Ronaldo, Joe Cole and Tomas Rosicky.

“If you’re going to win The Premier League, you have to compare the players you have in your positions to those in other teams.

“Is the quality at Liverpool as abundant as it is at other clubs? Maybe not.

“Liverpool don’t seem to have the funds that United and Chelsea have got. That seems strange.

“It seems they are allowed one big signing in the summer instead of two or three, and that might be the difference.

“Rafa is not getting the backing he deserves.”
"The definition of insanity is not running into the same wall again and again; it's expecting a different result every time you do it."

i honestly believe that gerrard's best position is as an attacking midfielder...... just behind torres.....

also, it allows gerrard to move around the pitch a lot more - such as a spell on the left or right of the striker....

this also allows rafa more scope for tactical change during the game as gerrard can drop deeper to defend a lead if needs be.....

A very considered review there from Danny, a player & a fan, i agree that Rafa is not getting the backing he deserves, if he were to get it, i think he would build a truly epic team.

We have had many true 'Greats' here at Anfield, Fowler, Gerrard, etc, but time & time again we surround them with mediocrity due to cash restrictions, it must NOT be allowed to happen with Torres & Co.

It's not strange at all is it? Chelsea are backed by Abramovich and Man Utd turnover more than any other club in the world.

Correct. No club in the world can compete with Chelsea financially, and very few with ManU. It'd be great to see Rafa's hands untied in the transfer market, but realistically he is in the same position as all but a very small handfull of managers, ie. he is operating within a budget. That budget may be too small to enable us to compete on a level playing field, but it does not have to mean that we can't compete at all.

I can hear Levy on the phone to the FA to report him for tapping up Keane.

It wasnt that different in Spain with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Proportionally speaking perhaps there's a difference, but Valencia won the title out there despite not being on an equal footing financially.

The problem though, like i say, is that the differences in financial muscle between Barca/Madrid and Valencia arent in the same proportion as those between Chelsea/ManUtd and us. More so Chelsea than Man Utd, even United cant really compete with Chelsea if Abramovich decides he wants to go for it. Despite that though, Manchester are still able to win the league.

his argument is riddled with holes.

gerrard had one of his most productive seasons ever in the support role.
joe cole finished in a side that one nothing and rosicky? oh. dear. dear. me.

the only thing I agree with is rafa should be given more money. like, duh!! WOW danny thanks for the news flash.

well he wouldnt get back into our squad.
look he has a point about the backing Rafa gets, doesnt take a genius to work that out. But SG has revelled in his new position and has done a lot more damage there than he would have if he was in Xabis role
