Time was when all you got was a paragraph in the Echo the next night (which usually got the scorer's names mixed up anyway) and that was it. It certainly served to build up the anticipation prior to the season's official start (which in our case was generally the Charity Shield), and, as in '87 with the arrival of Barnes, the fact that all we had to go on was word-of-mouth provided more of a buzz when you actually got to see a new signing perform.

Nowadays all new players have been watched, judged and often dismissed even before the season begins, usually on the basis of a 30 minute run-out half-way up the Alps. There's no mystery anymore, just saturation coverage of every stretch, comment or fart as long as it's made by someone wearing a red shirt. I appreciate that there's a massive demand for this, I just don't think it's necessarily a good thing.

Having said that, I'll still be watching the match tonight, will still unfairly critique every wrong move that Degen, Dossena, Cavalieri, Voronin, Pacheco, et al make, and will still wish that I didn't buy into it all and was away doing something more useful, like sneezing or frowning at spiders, instead.
Go away, this is the wrong forum for common sense, decent posts, off to the library with you grrr.
Those that hid Anne Frank were breaking the law.
Those that killed her, were following the law.

If it wasn't Kat's dad's birthday I'd be at this game. Gonna be arguments tonight though, Kat supports Hertha.
