played against the Scum 'Legends' last night in my local football team's ground. First time in ages that stadium was filled and I have to say, it was a bloody good game. They still have it, especially young Molby who was named man of the match!
The match finished 3-3, but the Pool won it on penalties with Big Jan scoring the decisive pen after Ben Thornley had his saved by Bob Bolder.
Id have been mighty disappointed if I was a united fan as their so-called legends were nowhere near as prestigious as ours - hadnt heard of half their team before. they did have Lee Sharpe, Clayton Blackmore, Lee Martin, Frank Stapleton, Ben Thornley and id just about heard of Russell Beardsmore.
Whereas, we had Phil Neal (who by the way sang YNWA as if it were the national anthem, fair play), Big Jan, John Wark, Alan Kennedy, John Aldridge, McAteer, Mike Marsh, Paul Walsh, Phil Babb, Mark Walters to name but a few. Ok, the last couple may not be legends but they were regulars for a time.
The match was defo taken seriously, Utd given a very dodgy penalty which clearly pissed McAteer off as well as the LFC fans. Not being biased but we were easily the better team, some cracking 1 touch passing with Molby pulling the strings. I swear to god, there was one point where Big Jan received the ball and burst through 4 of their players and forced the keeper into a great save. the crowd erupted at that. He still has the quality, no question.
With 2 great volleys from John Durnin and John Wark and a tidy finish from Mark Walters, it should have been enough to see off the scum. However, they opened the scoring from a Blackmore header, made it 2-2 from a Sharpe penalty and equalised again from a Lee Martin tap-in.
Aldridge came on at half time only to go off injured 15 mins later, ably assisted by our new physio Bruce Grobbelaar
, himself ruled out through injury, yet was extremely animated on the touchline.
Managed to get an autograph off John Aldridge, and reminded him of his great finish in the '89 Cup Final, which seemed to cheer him up! Cracking guy as well as a top striker.
Great night was had, would defo recommend watching these lads play, great to see how good they all still are.
And..........we beat the Scum
