As the second half progressed the "back3" suffered from the "Fabio effect" and substitutions should have been made. That's when Momo was needed. After 55 mins and not before.

The leftside was a defensive disaster last night but created so much in the first 45 mins going forward that we didn't suffer that much from it. The Turks had their chances with crosses from their RM in the first half as well because Fabio was not to be seen out there. Poor Agger. It's Sami and Traoé all over again.

If Rafa had thrown Riise or even Warnock in after 55 mins and subed Garcia with Momo the two goals would never have happend.

Reina - Does not inspire confidence in the defense these days. Looking more and more like Dudek every day. 4,5.

Finnan - Wonderful cross for Crouch's goal. I love when he goes forward. He should be forced to make too runs every half upfield. Was involved in both goals from the Turks but the real problem lies elsewhere. 7.

Carra/Agger - Suffered from Fabios woeful defending. Agger basically played a CB and a LB at the same time. Carra spend too much time trying to close the gap. The entire Backline suffered from Fabio's exploits. Both goals came after initial crosses from our left side. I really don't think that they can be blamed for the two goals. It happens when the opponents gets to throw low pressure balls into our box time after time. They did well to hold down the fort for almost 60 mins! 6,5 for both.

Aurelio - Woeful positioning and no defeding whatsoever. It's all good that he did better on the ball and made some runs and passes upfield but if you can't fulfill the primary target, namely to defend, then your just not cutting it! I can't wait to get Riise back! 4.

Pennant - beat his man on several occations and looked really good in the first half. Created lot's of situations losing his marker. Really good 1st half. Lost a little in the second and needs more concentration on the final ball. Gave us drive and pace on the right wing in the 1st half and that is exactly what we need! 6,5.

Alonso - The pace and movement on the ball is lightning when Gerrard is in the midfield. Looked a little dazed and we didn't really see a lot of him. 6.

Gerrard - Just looks better at CM. Let's face it people. Gave us the speed we need in our passing and made us look like a team with drive and ambition. The first half was magic and this was all due to Gerrard. 7,5.

Garcia - From hero to zero. Took the happy boots off in the break and he should have stayed off with them. 6.

Kuyt - worked his ass off tonight as usual and looks sharp. Must be the best partner any striker could wish for in a 4-4-2! The reason Crouch could do what his good at. 7.

Crouch - Finally gets to do what he was meant to do. To stay and lurk in the box. Looked sharp when he had to and scored a wonderful goal. Didn't back track anywhere near as much as he used to because of Kuyt. Well done Crouch. A striker strikes and that is all that matters. Fair play Crouch. 8,5 and MOM.

Rafa - good team. We played the best football I have seen for a long time in the first half. Should have done something about Fabio sooner rather than later. 7,5 for three goals, 60 fantastic mins and Gerrard a CM!

Player of the day: Sukur - What a player. If you didn't love him before you will now. Thank God this 'has been' was at Anfield to safe the day with his 'deadly skill'. Looks like a 2CV going off-road.
I have a few quibbles, like i thought you over egged the Gerrard in the middle line. But on the whole an excellent analysis particularly the Fabio effect!!

      Cheers Bob. Much appreciated!

The "Momo at CM" crusaders are totally losing the sight of the ball this time around. Imho we played some of the best football I have seen from Liverpool for a long time, in the first 45 mins. The way we moved the ball through, around and over the midfield. The intensity and the pressure upfield. The overall presence of good ball players who looked comfortable on the ball. The first half was pretty close to the good old days for me!

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.

You must have a very poor memory then. We played great for the opening 15 minutes.

That's all you have to say? What about your Momo crusade?

I agreed because you echoed my sentiments after the game Albeit we have slightly different views on the CM positions. Like Polo said, we play our best football with Xabi, Momo, and Gerrard! Can't advocate dropping any of these guys unless condition of the players is a factor.

We're coming into great form at the moment. Spells against both Spurs and Newcastle displayed this as well. This last game was just an extension of great form off the back of us coming together (after the summer hangover) for me.

If you had Gerrard on the right and Momo in the middle from the start of the game the outcome would have been similar to last night IMO.

Your reading of the game is good though - post more

And besides, what about my opinion on the necessity for Momo in the side? Playing well for a mere 15 minutes at the start of a game does nothing to change my mind. Maybe you're just easily pleased.

I still think there's a Ramadan issue here. He appeared on the bench at the start of it for a while last season?? It could be a temporary measure while his body adapts. I could be speaking nonsense and it wouldn't be the first time. I don't for a second think we'll ever get an official line on this (rightly so) as it'll lend itself to idiots quoting Shankly's religion effort!! It'll be open to conjecture until i see him dropped next season - after that i'll write it down.

                        6 = average performance
Reina 4 - Looked shaky throughout & looks short of confidence. Its getting to the point were he may need a rest for his own good.
Finnan 7 - Best of our defenders last night.
Carra 5.5 - Wasn't given much protection but looked at 6's & 7's at times
Agger 5.5 - As per Carra.
Aurelio 4 - This match summed him up. Great going forward, brilliant cross for the 1st goal but a shambles defensively. All their besst moves were down our left, often when Aurelio was out of position. I know defending is not the best part of his game but if you are playing LB, then you must play the part.
Pennant 7 - Did pretty well, & lovely little cross for Luis' goal. His best game for us.
SG 6 - Burst forward well at times and was a constant threat
Alonso 5 - looked off the pace once again. Will the real Xabi Alonso please stand up
Garcia 7 - Scored a goal & was always a threat. His defensive shortcomings were highlighted by Aurelio's poor performance but Luis job is to primarily to score & create & he did that.
Kuyt - 6 Worked hard but never really got into the game
Crouch 9 Two brilliant goals & linked up well with his new strike partner. What more could you ask for.

Maybe so, but when people say crusade to me in this context i don't take it literally. I replace it with stance At the end of the day there'll be fireworks if we take all football discussions seriously. Remember we're a fickle bunch and our opinions tend to waver with each passing minute!

There is a necessity for Momo. But Momo wasn't the issue last night. With Fabio and Garcia on the left flank we left the Turks with more space than they had in 74 when they invaded Cyprus. All this bollox about Agger/Carra and Alonso/Gerrard not being able to take care of business is a misread of circumstances if there ever was one. We played well for more than 15 mins and if only Rafa has made some changes sooner rather than later the game would never have evolved to the thriller it became.

I believe that we should use Gerrard/Alonso at home and Gerrard/Momo away. We can rotate/move/sub after the first 45 mins but at Anfield we need Gerrard at CM to move the ball around faster than Momo seems to be capable
of. Momo is an awful passer under pressure and with Alonso dropping back at home to dictate pace Momo gets stuck in an unfortunate creative CM role that he can't handle. This problem was very obvious and visible against Spurs (1st half), to name one game.

I know Shaggy from sixcrazymins and quite like him tbh. Let him blow off steam if he feels the need. It really makes no difference to me as long as we are having a constructive dialogue
