This is the first time I have gone into a season knowing we are not going to win league and I blame this on rafa.

Rafa has been here five years and has built a good squad but has failed to solve our problems out wide, instead he just keeps buying cms and defenders. He is going to spend over 40 mil this summer and the only real improvement we can be sure of is keane over crouch but even crouch got his goals.

We are miles behind the top 2 in the wide areas, why do liverpool a team that wants to win the prem have players out wide like kuyt who only adds defensive work on the wing, shouldnt we have a team who can go out and beat teams rather then having wingers who are more worried about the stopping the other teams full backs attacking.

I have now lost faith in rafa winning the league because he simply isnt as good as the rest in the transfer market, even when he won the leagues with valencia the previous manager had bought the team he coached.

At the end of the day rafa has had more money then houliier and a similar amount of time here but he hasnt got us any closer, we are still 2 or 3 playaers away from making a real challenge.

alonso and garcia, everyone else was houllier's signing, so it wasn't exactly the same squad and both alonso and garcia played key roles in that journey.

but i guess if nothing happens to torres the lowest we would go would still be fourth.. haha was just joking around
I can't see Everton overtaking us, they haven't improved their squad, whilest we have. I would hope we'll widen the gap on them this year. Even if they get a 20-goal a season striker I don't think they have the depth in their squad.

Villa if they lose their captain and best player won't be the same team. I think Portsmouth will have a good season, and could well finish 5th but I'd be devastated if any of those teams finished above us

Everton where very lucky to do as well as they did last year. They have a paper thin squad and unlike Newcastle and Villa who had the same problem they have lost players and failed to bring anyone in. You have to admire what Moyes has done with them but I think he has taken them as far as they can go and I would expect them to finish between 7th and 10th this year if they don't make some good signings.

I think Villa might improve even if they loose Barry. They lacked depth last year and at their young players like Agbonlahor and Young will be better for a years extra experience. If they can get a good right back then I think they will challenge for 5th. Portsmouth are a solid side but I would be surprised if they are good enough for more than a challenge for the UEFA. Spurs I think by the end of the season will be a real force but the level of changes for me means they might struggle to hit the ground running. The team I think might surprise people though is Man City with more resources I think Hughes will do well for them (assuming that Shinawatra maintains his interest and level of funding).

The areas we needed improving in he has sorted. Last year our biggest problems was when Torres or Gerrard were out injured. With Ngog he finally has another striker with speed, if Torres didnt play then our attack was as slow as feck. With Keane being signed we now have another player who can play in the role Gerrard was in.
We really missed attacking FB's last year and with Dossena especially it looks like that has been sorted out as well.
The other area which needs sorting is our free kicks and corners, Barry should be able to really help in these areas.
When we had our full squad last year we were one if not the best teams in the league, the extra additions should improve the strength of our first team and the squad.

anyway..... i eventually found this thread because i remember i was gonna reply to it when our first 6 games were out of the way.....

anyway, 14 points out of 18 is a very solid start and lets be honest, although it should be 16 if you look at the stoke match, we were lucky to get the 3 points vrs boro so perhaps it evens itself out somewhat....

at the end of the day, wins against united and everton were great. I personally feel that villa were there for the taking and still cant understand why babel didnt come on instead og ngog but **** it, look forward is my motto!!!!

our next 6 games are just as vital and tricky away matches to spurs, mancity and chelsea could be crucial... 7 points in those 3 games would be class. our next 3 homes are wigan, pompey and wba and should really be gettin 9 points there.....

                        come on you reds.....kick on..

also, our squad is so ****in strong right now. Today v everton away, our team did not feature mascherano, agger, babel, hyypia or benayoun..... that is strenght in depth lads.....

I dont care if we play our second string for the Carling Cup, FA Cup & Champions League.

We have to have our strongest, fittest 11 for every Premiership match. We have a brilliant chance of winning the premiership, the trophy we simply have to win.

It is a good start and we need to keep this kind of point hoist to win the league.

If this avg. continues we will end up somewhere between 88-90 points, which at minimum will be a challenge for the title right untill the end, and could be enough to win it.

                            Go on you reds!
