I don't think it will get him sacked - and imo 90% of people can see why he might be doing it - it purely comes down too the fact that in the Premiership Barry has been better than Alonso for two years, and for whatever reason Rafa (who knows more about what goes on than anyone) feels Barry will improve our team - now whether thats because he will fit into our se up/system better etc etc we won't know cause we can only speculate about what benitez is thinking, what his plans are etc etc.
With regards to the price - then i agree that £18m sounds a lot for barry - i think £15m plus finnan would be a great deal for villa and they should snap our hands off for it. - But to counter my thoughts I can also see that Barry is arguably keeping lampard/Hargreave/CArrick out of the england XI
No the width issue - i think it would be great if we signed this mystical wide winger that we all seem to want, but WHO? who should we sign, who should we spunk £18m to play as a winger. Add to what i said, noone has any idea what rafa is thinking, as many people to think maybe rafa has decided that we don't need an out and out winger, cause he has a trick up his sleeve that he will keep hidden to the start of the season - we then play 3-5-2 with wingbacks (degen/Dossena) providing the width. et cet ctec
