I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

REDS DRAW OADBY OR LEEDS IN CUP
Steve Hunter 07 November 2008
Liverpool will travel to either Oadby Town or Leeds United in the third round of this season's FA Youth Cup.
Leicestershire based Oadby Town take on Leeds on Wednesday, November 19 at the 2,000 capacity ground Topps Park, to see who will have the right to take on Hughie McAuley's side.
The third round tie has to be played by Saturday, December 13.
Liverpool under-18s produced a stylish display as they cruised to a 2-0 win over Everton in an entertaining mini derby at the Academy.
First-half goals from Lauri Dalla Valle and David Amoo did the damage as Hughie McAuley's men ensured the red half of the city would once again enjoy the local bragging rights.
The home side had gone into the match hoping to bounce back following last week's heavy defeat in a top of the table clash with Manchester City, and there was no better game to do so than against our closest rivals.
However, with so much at stake neither team got into their stride early on and the usual intensity associated with these types of matches meant there was little to shout about.
In fact, there was no goalmouth action until the quarter of an hour mark when Cory Sinnott forced a fine save at his near post from Martin Hansen.
It seemed to spark Liverpool into life and they took control of the proceedings with their first real opportunity of the match when Dalla Valle raced through to coolly fire home on 18 minutes.
The Reds visibly grew in confidence as the half wore on and after David Amoo rattled the frame of the goal with a thumping effort from a rebound, the former Millwall man doubled Liverpool's lead with a firm header just four minutes later.
At this point the Blues were struggling to cope with the home side's attacking verve and Hughie McAuley's men could have gone in at the interval leading by more than the two goal margin, had the Everton rearguard not done well to twice block goalbound efforts from the enterprising Amoo.
Having been overwhelmed for large periods of the first 45, the away side inevitably improved after the break, although their best chance of note came courtesy of Hope Akpan's 25 yard drive that flew way over the top.
As an attacking force Liverpool continued to look the more likely and Adam Pepper twice went close with free-kicks before the midfielder sent a clever 20 yard effort inches past the far post.
For all their dominance the Reds could not add to their margin of victory, but will now head into next week's clash at Stoke in buoyant mood following a comfortable victory over our neighbours.
In this week’s Academy diary John Owens reflects on the under-18s’ 4-1 defeat by Manchester City, the first team debut of Stephen Darby and looks forward to Saturday’s mini-derby against Everton.
We suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat at top of the table Manchester City last Saturday when it's fair to say we were not at our best. We are both doing well in the league but the FA Youth Cup holders have edged ahead of us now, and to be fair we were very much second best on the day.
We were disappointed with some of the individual performances. City played more as a team and we felt our players let themselves down, particularly the goals we conceded from set pieces and corners.
What we have to do is learn from this game. Each time we have a win or a defeat we always reflect on the good and bad things and what we can do better next time. That is part of the development programme and we always want to win every game we play because that is the Liverpool way.
Our next game is the small matter of the derby against Everton and there is always extra spice to it whether it be at first team, reserves or Under-18 level. It's a special game and we are very much looking forward to it.
It will be a competitive game with lots of commitment as you would expect but we are looking for the team play to be evident from our players.
I know it's a special game for the local lads in the team but this week we have stressed to them the importance of not getting too carried away just because it's a match against Everton.
If they get extra motivation from the fact that the game is against Everton then that's great and has to be seen as a positive. What we don't want is to see our lads getting over eager and too wound up in a way that stops them from producing their best form.
While it was a disappointing night for the first team in London on Wednesday it was a real boost for the Academy to see Stephen Darby make his first team debut.
It was fantastic to see another one of our Academy players get a first team chance. It's difficult to make the breakthrough because it is a such a high standard but that's the way we want it.
Stephen earned the right to play for the first team with his consistent performances, and even though he was only on the pitch for a short time I thought he did very well.
On Wednesday night I will be making a trip to Leicestershire to watch the FA Youth Cup tie between Oadby Town and Leeds United. We play the winners of that game away and it is a tussle I am looking forward to seeing.
What is good about the Youth Cup is you get to know who you will be playing early on and you can scout the opposition. Anything can happen in cup football and Oadby Town have done very well to get this far. If you were a betting man you would expect Leeds to be superior but it doesn't always work that way in the cup.
We have to play Oadby or Leeds by December 13 so whoever we play we know we will be in for a tough match.
