    Rafa Came Close to Quitting!

EXCLUSIVE: Rafa Benitez thought of resigning from Liverpool last week and even discussed leaving the club with his closest allies, according to sources close to the Spanish manager. The only thing that stopped him from leaving Anfield was his respect for the Liverpool fans and for the people that work with him on a daily basis.

This is the first time since his arrival that Benitez has come this close to resigning, although on two other occasions offers from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and a couple of other major European clubs led him to reassess his future at Anfield. On both occasions he decided to stay put and the club improved his contractual situation.

According to sources this time around, it is his desperation with the Barry transfer deal, the lack of a satisfactory conclusion to the Alonso transfer and the gaping hole on the left hand side of midfield - yet to be filled - that are the major causes of his dissatisfaction and frustration. This has nothing to do with his contract. “Rafa doesn’t care about what he is getting paid, he thought he was being undermined this summer and was close to giving up”, says a friend of the manager.

The situation at Anfield has been so confusing over the last few weeks - with the Gareth Barry saga and Xabi Alonso's failed move to either Juventus or Arsenal - that Benitez felt the need to explain, at his Friday press conference, that he was not involved in the Barry transfer: another way of saying that if it did not take place, then it was not his fault.

“Since I started talking with Martin O'Neill in April, I didn't talk with Aston Villa. All of the talks have been between Rick Parry and the owner and chief executive of As ton Villa and they have been pretty good... I was not doing the talks about Barry, I was not doing the talks about Alonso, so if someone wants to talk about these players, then they have to talk with the chief executive of our club. If you want to talk about football, talk with me," said Rafa.

According to different sources, Benitez would have liked Gareth Barry to have been his first signing of the summer, ahead of even Robbie Keane, and by now the squad would have been closed. Instead, there is at least one new player to come in, although Liverpool have not yet given up hope in signing the Villa midfielder. The club, according to sources close to Tom Hicks, can afford Gareth Barry or a new left winger without the need to sell anybody.

One final factor, that influenced Benitez' decision to stay, was his belief that the team is set for a very good season and that they are in a position to improve on last year

He needs to put his toys back in his pram and start managing the ****ing team.

The fact that he likes to inflate the prices of the players he wants to sell and pay peanuts for those he wants to bring in will most likely always end up a stalemate.

I think the fans may start to lose patience very soon..

Like trying to sell Alonso for 18m and bringing in Barry for 18m? At the end of the day Rafa was undermined by the owners and parry. He identified Barry as his number one target and obviously felt he was a player the team needed to mount a challenge for the title. 18 million is the going rate for an england midfielder considering the price united paid for Hargreaves and Carrick who are both below Barry on the international pecking order btw. I don't see how he has thrown his toys out of the pram here. The yanks humiliated him last season and he took it on the chin. Now it's starting all over again and he obviously feels disillusioned. Time for us to be supporting him not making throwaway comments about him

Barry is a better player than Xabi Alonso, so paying £3m more (and flogging off Alonso for £15m or so) would had us only coughing up £3m. It was a good deal IMO, so I don't know why the owners have to interfere in matters which aren't really their speciality. Rafa has decided to dispense himself of the overrated Alonso, who has had 2 poor seasons on the trot, only for the owners to interfere with that.

If he goes I won't hold that against him. The club is ran by idiots, add to that that some of our supporters think they have a footballing brain better than Rafa.

So this could be Rafa's last season, he's had enough and who can blame him. Hopefully he can go out on a high.

Can't really blame him for being fed up with the whole situation surrounding the club, but I am very happy that he has chosen to stay!

Rafa is a control freak, and as such he is bound to have clashes with the board etc. from time to time. Won't be any better if he goes to Real...

If the money was available and the decision not to buy Barry was simply because the owners and Parry thought the price was too high, then Rafa was undermined, end of story.

To not have the money is a different matter, but here it is a case of saying we know better than the manager.

Parry was bad enough being simply incompetent, now he is so petrified of losing his job he will always side with the owners.

Something has to change, because the current situation is untenable, and my fear is that Rafa will eventually walk.

It's not the owner's nor the Chief Executive's job to decide if we're overpaying or not. Rafa has instructed them that he wants Barry over Xabi, meaning it was their job to find suitors for Xabi and organize the money to buy Barry.

This hasn't been done and isn't Rafa's fault. If he goes, I hope the ****ing whingers in here will have a field day of triumphalism.

we are pushing away the best manager we have had in years. we are only 4 years into a masterplan. he has turned it round. the youth set up is good and looks promising. we wont do it this year as we are just two signings short yet again. back the manager this year and next and we will win it then in my opinion

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

Suggesting Carson was worth ten mill.when Villa had already paid two for the loan period and thought they would probably pay another two or three was the start of the Barry debacle, then we sell him for three+.
Sure we would have got Barry if we hadn't pissed them off.

This is worrying as its come from Guillem himself.

I have a feeling this will be his last season with us as things just aren't improving with G&H, and it looks like Rafa is being left out of all transfer negotiations. He didn't even seem to know about the Alonso and Arsenal talks. What the **** is going on?

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

If this really is the case, why was the deal not sorted immediately? Surely, if Rafa identifies Barry as his No.1 target, then the club should bust it's balls to ensure the signing. No wonder Rafa has come out and had a dig!
