Standard Liege - Match thread

The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals. If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knock-out round contest the final, held as a single match in May.Originally posted by Nicey View PostAnyone .

**** off mate, that's disrespectful to Standard Liege who are not a **** team (champions of their league).Originally posted by sackparry View Posti'm not having that. ok we can't compete in our league i appreciate that.
i do however expect to wipe the floor with some second rate belgium team.
They played out of their skins over two legs. I'm sure AC Milan could say the same about us in 2005 (Traore?) so just be happy that we were good enough to beat a good team.
Now we can concentrate on winning the damn thing.

So just got in from the game, (traffic on the M62 going towards Manchester way was awful due to roadworks) and here's my two pennies:
In the end we got the result, which is all that matters. We're in the draw, lets not dwell, lets get on with it and carry on.
The performance was pretty flat, the crowd too were pretty flat. Gotta hand it to the Leige fans though, singing for almost all the game in French or whatever, then randomly breaking out, You Only Sing When You're Winning in English?!
Some players didn't seem to want to take a man on at times, Babel looked in two minds at various times and I'm a big fan of the lad, think this was a bad day for him.
Dirka was awful bar the goal. The fans were really giving him some until he scored. Many around me couldn't believe it was Keane who came off for El Zhar, (who I thought looked great, good touch, willingness to run and I think will definitely make it)
All in all we weren't really at the races again, but we won so balls to it. Next step, 3 points on Sunday against Villa

Seriously though mate, he has spent quite a bit. Not as much as the Scum and the other Scum, but quite a lot of money. 5 years later that's his team out there playing like strangers with no obvious tactics. If you want to believe that he needs more time, and that Standard Liege are a brilliant European team and that Rafa knows how to break down teams, then fine, believe. I've stopped. All I see is a defensive manager with good players who plays Dirk Kuyt and Yossi Bennyoun on the wings in the hope that it will eventually work. I'm fed up of watching the drivel that is served up. I really hope Rafa gets it right, because I love the man, but with every passing game a part of me loses hope. He at last-chance saloon.Originally posted by Levi View PostI'm not sticking up for Rafa 100% mate. But when you say 'so much money can be spent' - we're paupers compared to United & Chelsea. United can spend £60m-odd on Carrick, Hargreaves, Anderson & Nani - none of who are regulars. Chelsea can write off £30m on Shevchenko and spend £16m on a right back. Their bench costs £££s.
Remember the squad that Rafa inherited? And that not only has he had to keep up, people have expected him to overtake Utd & Chelsea on the money that he's had. I'm not saying he's faultless in the transfer market, but lets cut him some slack. Bottom line is the benchmark has been significantly raised - and we were miles behind to start off with.

Why? Let's be fair at least we were aware that Kuyt was on the pitch. Keane did and continues to do **** all.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostCan't believe he put on El Zhar for Keane, and kept Kuyt on.
El Zhar is the closest thing we are going to get to a winger so get used to it.
Talk of number 19 is insane, we are so shockingly bad right now and do not seem to be improving, got lucky so far but we will get punished and soon!

No idea what that was about. Shame, I wanted to see a certain poster's reaction to us winning, and whether he did a disappearing act again at that point.
Getting pretty tired of these match threads being disrupted by a tiny minority of agenda driven posting, I'm absolutely convinced that such idiotic posting cannot be the work of a real liverpool fan. I'm sure most people thought we were shocking tonight all over the park (Reina excepted), but when people are more interested in spouting vitriolic, repetative nonsense on here than in actually watching a tense and important game, I'm pretty sure they have no place on this site.I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?
