Why are there so many Asian football fans but very few Asian football players?
as parm said most asians are encouraged to study and not waste time playing football. The new generations are different in that they accept that children need a balanced upbringing and sport is a part of that.
the other thing is that asians tend to be naturally smaller than white or black players and although not lacking in skill or technique the size factor does come into it.
I read an article in the sunday times around3 years ago about youth rugby in new zealand and that white parents were pulling out their kids from the sport because they were going up against naturally bigger and stronger polynesians.
the average size of a white 15year old was 5 8" and weight was around 10 stone. they were going up against 15 year olds from native backgrounds who were averaging out at 6 1" and 16 stone.
The smaller white kids were being seriously hurt (not on purpose) just in the normal course of games.
the genetics does have a role to play. look at michael chopra he's asian and yet he's only about 5 8 ish.

nothing gets past you does it!!
but it is true, we identified so much with him, he was a ethnic superstar who got the same sort of abuse that we all got, except from the Kop, and rammed it all down their throats with skill and style
A pedant writes: I think you mean "...ethnic minority superstar...". The one thing that unites us all is that we are all ethnic, but our ethnicity might not be the same. The word comes from the classical Greek word "ethnos", meaning "nation" or "people"
The John Barnes thing is quite interesting too. Although he became a Liverpool hero, he was the subject of shocking racist abuse when he came to Anfield with Watford. Apart from the usual unsavoury noises and chants I recall on one occasion people throwing bananas at him when he went to take a corner kick, about 10 yards from where I was standing. People like to overlook it now, but it definitely happened. We have always had as much low-life scummy supporters as any other club, as much as we like to kid ourselves otherwise
