IMO, I think Rafa is grateful that Gerrard is such a great player... but also pissed off that he has a megastar in his his team.
Rafa has a huge team/squad ethic and may think that Gerrard undermines that by being undroppable. Therefore he feels he would have to play Gerrard anywhere, just to make sure that he's accomodated. Rafa's not had to deal with such a star yet, and the situation could be frustrating for him.
My own opinion is that while Gerrard is undeniably brilliant, his success contributes to our failure. He is such a commanding and inspirational player, he does berate people for the simplest of mistakes, demands the ball when there are other options and lacks the discipline to be part of an effective machine rather than the Hollywood hero.
He hit the side netting against Bolton from a tight angle, but if he was waiting for a cross from someone else in that position, how would he have reacted? Watch any game of ours and you'll see him slating people for not playing him in if the ball goes astray. Some players in the team may think that he's SUCH a talisman for the club and city, that going against him will be bad for them. This may make them choose the wrong option in a match and for what? To escape the fury of the club talisman?
No matter how good Gerrard is, he'll never be the same for me after the 2 summers of Chelski ****e we had to put up with.
Just a thought.Last edited by Sydney Vicious; 01-10-06, 01:19 AM.

hi wynne
i'm not really on board with the "he's so good he's bad" argument. when he scored in the cup final against west ham i remember yelling "that boy is ****ing priceless."
and i still think that
with all the shankly quotes knocking about at this time of year, when I see Gerrard at left mid I can't help but hear Shanks saying "football is a simple game complicated by fools."
Not that I'm saying Rafa is a fool of course, but I'm with Bob (I think it was) who said that square pegs in round holes are for emergencies and not something you do out of choice.

I absolutely agree that Gerrard should not be playing wide left. If he plays he should be wide right or in place of Alonso, not Sissoko.Originally posted by alunevanshi wynne

But I'm just airing a possibility. Don't forget Gerrard's celebrations against West Ham, brushing aside JAR to point to his own name on his back. He ran to the crowd celebrating himself after scoring a free kick (against whom I forget, Pompey?) a year or so ago and RB had to remind him of his teammates (or so we're led to believe). This sort of thing I do not like, it's a team game, not one for individuals.

Well to be honest, now that you mention it, his marraca solos really piss me offOriginally posted by wynne1975I absolutely agree that Gerrard should not be playing wide left. If he plays he should be wide right or in place of Alonso, not Sissoko.

give the boy a break.
he hasn't performed to his amazing last year performance, but so what.
he had a shot today which last year would have gone in, but se la vie.
he is our best player and rafa knows that playing him all over the pitch is a nightmare to the opposition.
he will not perform in the middle as it restricts him to much. for someone to think that rafa wants rid is stupid. rafa knows what he wants out of SG he is only struggling to fit the others into the team.
Unfortunately we are still lacking a goal scorer.
but all credit to bolton. they knew what they had to do to beat us and they did it very well. its a shame we are so predictable.
onwards and upwards!

If Gerrard gets a run in central midfield he has to be partnered by Momo, with Xabi on the bench.
