Id say he has all the necessary attributes to be as good as anyone in world football so lets be positive and enjoy our recent successes. Or are you still concentrating on the stoke result?

There's being positive - and i think Riera has already shown signs of how good a player he is, and i think he'll get better too.

But then there's being vastly over the top, in making a comparison and suggesting a resemblence to one of the greatest players to ever play the game.

I think I am over the top in my negativity towards Houllier and Rafa but that's only because both prefer the long ball, over tactical boring brands of football. I also think it is possible to be over the top in being positive too like this guy is comparing Riera to Zidane reminding me Danny Murphy being copared to Platini.

The point I am making is that LFC fans are becoming as deluded as the bitters in some cases... we haven't won the league in 18 years and I have to say reading some forums it seems like it's only been 2 years....

His easy style and touches reminds me of Zidane actually. Now he needs to add goals and killer passes to his arsenal before we can make true comparisons.

I think that Zidane in his prime would possibly be like Reira, looking class, still struggling a bit with the physical and frenetic pace of the Premiership.

If he scores 10-15 goals a season, he will cement his place IMO and truly be considered a worthy replacement for Barnes

To me, both of the bits in bold are equally over the top and baseless.

To compare him to Zidane and Barnes now, at this stage, after just a few games, is utterly ludicrous. He's shown some nice bits of skill, hasn't looked overawed, and doesn't get out-muscled, but realistically the most you could say at this stage is that he's made a promising start to his LFC career.

Your writing him off as being nowhere near that good and never will be is equally baseless. He's not done much wrong so far, and who knows how good he could become? Ronaldo was a sack of **** with no end product for two years at Utd, and now he's the "best player in the world TM" according to the media.

I don't think Riera benefits from any comparisons to other players, he needs to make his own name. I do think that he can offer something that has been missing from the team for a while and that is fluidity. That is he will keep the ball moving quickly and not give the ball away lightly while bringing other players into the game. Some of his neat interchanges and clever short balls to date have given us a taste of what he's about, hopefully he'll improve and be more influential as time goes on. We need someone to oil the machine.
