Liverpool have confired Martin Skrtel suffered cruciate knee ligament damage on Sunday, but will have to wait 24 hours before finding out how long the Slovakian will be sidelined for.
The no-nonsense defender was stretchered off during Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Manchester City.
Skrtel fell awkwardly when chasing down a ball and looked in serious pain when receiving treatment.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez admitted in his post-match interview that he feared the defender would be sidelined for some time and his fears seem set to be realised.
A scan has confirmed ligament damage, but he will have to wait 24 hours before a full diagnosis can be made.
"Martin underwent a scan this morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," club spokesman Ian Cotton told Liverpool's official website.
"He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again."
