Cautious Optimism About Our Chances Reaches the Grauniad

Rob Smyth on the Guardian Sports Blog had this to say this evening. I think he has it about right.

Liverpool comeback shows they might just be the real dealLate wins, comeback wins, lucky wins: Liverpool are ticking a lot of the boxes of the potential champion

A win is a win is a win but, as Morrissey almost said, some wins are bigger than others. To see Liverpool's delirious celebration of Dirk Kuyt's winning goal at Eastlands today, after they had been 2-0 down at the end of a thoroughly miserable first half, was to see a side with an increasingly powerful belief that destiny is with them, and that it has decided their run without a league title will end at 19 years.

Liverpool did not play particularly well until Pablo Zabaleta was given a straight red for an appalling challenge on Xabi Alonso, after which they picked City apart at will, but that only adds to the worthiness of their victory. There is an inclination to talk of such victories as displaying the "mark of champions", when a team have played badly but willed or lucked their way to a win.

Yet what is just as important as the perception that a lucky victory is the preserve of the bona fide title contenders is the extent to which the confidence and sense of fate that can be drawn from such victories permeates through future contests. Liverpool will glean an immeasurable psychological boost from the manner of their win.

There are still issues with the team, not least at full-back, but this will only reinforce the growing belief on the Kop that this could be Liverpool's year. Late wins, comeback wins, lucky wins: Liverpool are ticking a lot of the boxes of the potential champion. The force is strong in these ones.

Every title-winner recalls one symbolic victory: recent examples include Manchester United's heist at Anfield in March 2007, Chelsea's show of bare-chested cheek after withstanding a physical battering at Blackburn in February 2005, and Thierry Henry's 4-2 win over Liverpool in April 2004. Usually, by their very nature, they come in the second half of the season. But if Liverpool win the league this year, this might be the one.

Comeback wins (Liverpool have already come from behind three times to win this season) and in particular late goals offer a window into a very healthy soul – remember how many Manchester United's treble winners scored – and this is the third time in seven league games that Liverpool have won with a goal in the final 10 minutes, two of them in injury time. Ryan Babel's winner against United also came late, with 13 minutes to go.

Liverpool are gathering force through each game and, as a consequence, gathering an even stronger force for the long-game of the the title race.

It is indeed nice to see the feeling spread. Although in some ways I'd prefer us to sneak up on people without too much hype.

Agree dww. I wish we could do that but it is very difficult to sneak up and win the league especially with the standards set by Chelsea and Mancs in the last 2 seasons.

I am too afraid to talk about title challenges due to the fear of jinxing it. But it is the first time in a lot of years I am seeing an absolute maniacal desire to win the game when we are behind ( especially Borough and today). The way we are throwing bodies forward and refusing to settle for a draw is very very pleasing.

One thing is sure, if we play the way we are doing this is going to be a special season with a lot of entertaining matches.

This is the first time in many seasons I am generally seeing BOTH fullbacks ahead of the wide midfielders!! Manure, Chelsea and Arsenal have been doing that for years.
        One tit for another.

Oh I certainly agree that in terms of getting points it is hard to sneak up but I remember so many times (especially in the 90s) where at the beginning of the season the media would build us up after a good start and then we would inevitably **** up. I just think if we can get to Christmas with the media still questioning our challenge then it would be better for us. Unlike United and Chelsea our team hasn't had to put up with the pressure of expectation of winning over the long period that is a league season and the longer we go into every game with something to prove I think the easier it will be for us to gain the right mentality.

I'd agree that our attitude particularly in the games against the two Manchester clubs has been very pleasing as has the quality of some of our play.

If we beat Chelsea at their place, then everyone will be taking about us as potential table-toppers. That is the match that could, even so early in the season, be a psychological marker. If Chelsea don't lose that home record they will win the league and the sooner that invincibility is taken from them the better.

Chelsea are looking on hot form, but people are forgetting two importants things: 1) their star players are still injured (Cole, Carvalho, Essien, Drogba and Deco), 2) Rafa loves playing against tactical managers, i.e. he out tic tacs them. ;-)

What they did to Villa only proved that Chelsea still have a much better midfield and forward lineup than what hyped Villa fans believe - Villa fans can forget a top 4 finish, they'll be lucky to finish top 6. With the injuries Chelsea have we currently have a better forward and midfield lineup than them IMO. The only position of strength for Chelsea are their fullbacks.

I expect a cautious 0-0 from that game.

Not with Scolari in charge of Chelsea. They will go for the throat, so we better have a go to. But lets beat Wigan and Atletico before worrying about that game. A lot can happen with injuries before we play them, espescially with the international break.
