    Rafa Benitez

I dont know what he said at half time, but that was a totally different team that came out in the 2nd half.

In fairness, we were the better side at the beginning, until they scored. Then their second goal took the sting out of us and heads we dropping. From the moment they took the lead we seemed to lack fight, tempo and movement. Then the second went in and we lacked them even more.

To see the fight, character and excellent football we played in the 2nd half was an amazing turnaround.

We were lively, played with tempo, got players forward in numbers and had some real purpose.

The manager deserves enormous credit because, for all the brilliance of the players' desire in the 2nd half, it took something special from Benitez to get them back up when they looked mentally shot to pieces when they went in at HT.

He had them believing and, crucially, WANTING it again. I felt after the 1st goal for City, they wanted it more than us and they worked incredibly hard to press us and stop us playing in the 1st half. After the break though, the desire was there for all to see and as much as the players deserve praise for that, it was Rafa who managed to bring that out of them, when all seemed lost.

I'm trying desperately hard to not get carried away, we've not yet played 20% of our league games and there's plenty of football to come. But you cant help being excited at the moment, the strength of character shown today was immense and if it had been Man Utd doing that, the press would've been raving about it for 2 weeks, through the international break and onto the next round of league games. They probably wont with us, but that's fine, i'd rather they didnt build us up too high and in a weird way, i'd rather be quietly getting on with things in 2nd place, instead of being top of the league and turning into the target of everyone's attention and the subject of opponents' desire to knock us off top spot.

Great return from 7 games and a nice time to consolidate and analyse while the international games take place. Hopefully Capello keeps Lampard in for England and gives Stevie a rest. Beating Wigan in a fortnight is crucial and wont be easy but when the league resumes again, we'll be full of confidence and ready to start another good 7 game run, fingers crossed.

All the best for Martin Skrtel, who's been a rock and deserves a full and speedy recovery. And here's hoping all those who go and play for their countries come back unscathed.

Rafa pulled off a blinder today

Rotation will be the key. Key players will need to be rested at some point (more than what he's doing right now). This season the players (and Rafa) have more belief, that's the difference.

You dont rest "in form" players ever, they dont get tired.

They're bound to be tired now and again. It's a myth that they never get tired; they just want to play everytime.

You think a footballer's life (or any professional sporstman) is that easy eh ? You're horribly wrong mate ... horribly wrong. It's a ****ing tough job which not only drains you on a physical level but on a mental one too. You need to compete all the time, not only because clubs do complete on a competitive level but on a squad basis also. Your team mate can nick your place so you have to produce all the time.

You're over simplifying things once again. Ask your mate Gerrard.

I think that it is nice that Rafa's most trusted lieutenant is now a football man (in Sammy Lee) rather than a fitness coach. I think that a large part of successful rotation is the psychological aspect and having the insight from a footballing rather than purely physical aspect makes that much easier to deal with. I also think it has shown slightly in the way we approach games that there is now more than one voice/plan being looked at.

I also think the analogy to regular work is probably unhelpful in this instance - look at top sprinters for a counter example where the work is even less long yet they often miss events to ensure when they race they are in peak condition. Thats not to say that I don't think that at times rest hasn't been over done just that it is clear that some players do need rest to perform well over a season. I think gradually we have put together a team/squad where people are mentally and physically good enough to play more games than we have had before. I also think it is a self reinforcing thing in that the more you win the easier it is to be up for the next game.

Rafa deserves credit both for being willing to bring in an assistant who might have differing views to him and for how he has used the freedom the added support has bought him this season.

His substitutions and team talks this weekend were excellent but I think it continues a good run of form the manager has been in all season.

Stop bitching about whether it is a hard job or not.

We are quick enough to slate Rafa for poor decisions and tactics. Yesterday, Rafa, the coaches and the players won a game that we would have lost last year. Given Man City's top 4 aspirations, this was a 6 pointer.

                  End of...
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Load of bollocks. Key players will need to play in most games if we are to win the prem. Thats what Rafa has been doing this season and it is clearly paying dividends.

FFS fredo f you are going to keep towing the line at least keep up with this seasons changes.

To be honest I think fredo has a point. I think we will need to rotate key players at some point. The key is when we do it and how the team reacts. We showed against United that that can be positively (I know that was injuries rather than rotation but most of the point remains unchanged). Last year United rested both Rooney and Ronaldo at some points and actually often dropped points when doing so but it never affected their team style or overall momentum over the season, which at times I think most people agree it has for us in the past. That is what, at the minimum, we need to be aiming for.

The player have more belief because we're winning. We're winning, largely, because we're not disrupting the rhythm of the side by changing half of it each game.

However, you do have a point about needing to change players, as we've got a gruelling schedule coming up:

                            Saturday, 18 October 2008
                            Barclays Premier League

                            Barclays Premier League
                            Liverpool v Portsmouth, 20:00

                            Tottenham v Liverpool, 17:30

                            Tuesday, 04 November 2008
                            UEFA Champions League
                            Liverpool v Atletico Madrid, D, 19:45

                            Saturday, 08 November 2008
                            Barclays Premier League
                            Liverpool v West Brom, 17:30

                            Tuesday, 11 November 2008
                            Carling Cup
                            Tottenham v Liverpool, R4, 19:45

                            Saturday, 15 November 2008
                            Barclays Premier League
                            Bolton v Liverpool, 12:45

That's 9 games in 4 weeks. Extremely gruelling.

Regarding your 'tiredness' point though, Souness ALWAYS bangs on about how he was never tired. The game was a lot slower back then though, i guess.
