    Carra supports wage cap

Liverpool defender accepts financial crisis must be averted.

Jamie Carragher believes a salary cap would be good for football if it helped ease financial worries.

Football Association chairman Lord Triesman warned on Wednesday that desperate measures may need to be taken in order to prevent spiralling costs in English football.

The proposal has received mixed reactions, with some believing less money in the Premier League would only succeed is pushing talent elsewhere.

Salary caps in football were abolished after a player revolt in the 1960s, leading to the astronomical wages paid out in the modern game.

As one of the Premier League's top performers Jamie Carragher falls into the bracket of players at the top end of the salary spectrum.

For anyone that didn't watch the video. Carra wasn't so clean coming forward

The Liverpool defender admits that ensuring the long-term future of the game is more important than money.

"I hope he (Triesman) brings it in when I've just finished!" Carragher joked while speaking on Sky Sports News.

"If bringing a wage cap in is going to stop teams going bust, then I'm sure it's got to happen.

"The most important thing is the football club.

The reporter actually asked Carra how the players were dealing with the credit crunch...

    WTF

I don't believe for one minute that any player would take a drop in salary.

If a salary cap comes in, players will either have to take a wage cut, or simply be sold.

I think all Premier League player's wages should be halved for the rest of the season, thus allowing clubs to half the ticket prices, thus helping the consumer afford to go to the game during these tough times.

      Who's with me?

When visiting a school, all the kids were going round saying who there favourite players were. Got to Carragher: "I'm Jamie Carragher, and my favourite player is Steven Gerrard.....because without him I wouldn't have won any medals"

Great idea, but it wouldn't work.

How many more tickets would Liverpool Football Club sell if they cut the ticket cost by half?

After 3 Home League games, Liverpool are averaging 96.4% capacity. That means we could have squeezed in about an extra 5 thousand fans over those 3 matches. The problem with Liverpool in marketing terms (and I would suggest, the 7 other clubs who have attendance figures over 95% of capacity) is not over pricing (I personally think they are overpriced) but under supply of seats. (Note to G&H - Need new Stadium ASAP)

So the argument would go, why should the one third of the clubs who don't have any trouble filling their home games, be forced to half prices when economically they don't need to. So they get exempted....Then this make the gap between top and bottom get bigger.

I like the idea of a salary cap, but salaries are not really the big issue in our game at the moment, causing debt to clubs (unless you're Leeds United)
Transfer fees are the big issue, and funnily enough, UEFA and FIFAs attempts to regulate 6+5 and other ideas, are only making the issue worse. Some of the prices for British players are out of the real world, but because they are English, clubs are being forced to pay (and by the sounds of things, on credit as well)
