RIERA: TORRES SHOWED ME THE WAY
    Jimmy Rice 25 October 2008

Albert Riera has revealed how Fernando Torres helped teach him the key to succeeding in English football.
The Spain international feared his Premier League dream was over after an unremarkable loan spell at Man City in 2006.

However, Riera admits the example set by El Nino over the last year and a half made him realise how to make it in England.

"What I have learned in recent years is that any footballer can succeed in the Premier League if he has talent and he is also prepared to back that up with hard work, effort and discipline," said the 26-year-old.

"That is the secret to foreigners succeeding here, and this time I came with no illusions.

"When I was younger, I just thought I could walk on to the field and play. You can't. Look at how hard Fernando Torres works at Liverpool. He wouldn't have had to do that in Spain. It's incredible.

"I am a more technical player now and also more mature. My pride won't let me fail this time."

Riera returned to Spain and Espanyol after leaving City with no expectation of arriving back in England one day.

"Nothing is impossible in football but I thought I was suited to football elsewhere," he added. "I found it hard to adapt at City. The training there was the hardest of my life - until I came to Liverpool!

"Nobody trains as hard as the English. It takes everything out of you but maybe that is why the levels of success have increased so much.

"During my time at City I found a type of football that was utterly professional but you had to have so much energy it was untrue. This time I was ready and so far I am doing much better. I am more suited to it now."

i didn't know anything about riera really.but just after he signed there was a scottish bloke on radio merseyside with alan jackson, in the studio he's a bit of a regular now in fact he has something to do with man city.anyway just after riera signed alan jackson was about to talk about him and this bloke as quick as a flash called riera a class act,and wasn't used properly when at city so couldn't show his true abillity.
        who's arsed?

Having been totally unimpressed with him at City, I was extremely sceptical about his signing, but he has completely proved me wrong so far and I am absolutely delighted about it.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

            He's been brilliant.

We all know he's got a lovely touch, a bit of skill etc about him but what's impressed me is the way he isnt afraid to put the boot in, good in the air too.

We haven't had a player like that since....????

              Anyone...

I did not see much of Riera when he was at city, or maybe i did not notice him.

But as soon as i saw him play for us, i knew he would give us that extra attacking option, something we have craved for so long, natural width.

He has continually impressed me so far, hence my fan club ... But no one else has joined it

thats probably because the last fan club on here belonged to the pony tailed turd.

riera has been a pleasant surprise, i'd love him to destroy chelsea today in the manner kewell destroyed chelsea in the cup a few seasons ago.

His ability to hold on to the football in tight areas is impressive. I always think he is going to lose it, brilliantly uses his body as a shield, a small trick and he is away from them. One of the slickest footballers I have seen.

He should be the next James Bond. Whenever he is cornered and enemies shoot at at up he would just control the bullets with his left feet, drop of a shoulder, one or two stepovers and run past them and escape.

No one is more delighted than his displays than myself.....seeing as though i took so much stick for saying he was a good player when he was first linked.

Was very surprised to hear Ian Wright describe Riera as our weak link , because he gives the ball away too much.

Can't he see what he's brought to the team, and i believe he'll get better.

I think Ian Wright just remembers the silly passes Riera played when still in our third of the pitch. And I believe he meant weak link in defence, not overall.

Personally I have no problem with Riera, though I will reserve full judgement on him until the end of the year. It would be unfair on him other wise. So far so good though.
