players we should have kept onto....

i really do feel that we should have kept some players that he sold.... in particular 2 home-grown players in Warnock and Guthrie......

both players could have been valuable players for us in my opinion and when you look at us spending 7m on dossena then i think we all realise that maybe we sold warnock a bit quickly....

on the other hand, the 2 players i mentioned above wanted to play every week so maybe it is understandable that they were allowed to leave the club...

i would like to see us implement a system similar to what barca are looking to do with some of their young players...for example crosas who they sold to celtic recently. We sold guthrie to newcastle for approx 3.5m in the summer. I think it would have been a great idea to insert a buy-back option into the deal whereby we have the option to buy the player back within 3 seasons for, say 5m. That way, newcastle would get a profit on a player that they took a punt on, liverpool would get to analyse the player over a period of time and see if he can cut it in the premier league and the player would get to play week-in week-out with the added benifet of knowing that he could still possibly make it at liverpool....

At the end of the day, players develop at different rates so just because a player doesnt make the grade at liverpool by the time he is 20 or 21, it doesnt mean that he wouldn't be a good player to have in 2 or 3 seasons time.... warnock is the obvious example here but to be perfectly honest, i could see guthrie being a similar player.... who knows, maybe in 2 or 3 seasons we will all be of the opinion that guthrie would be a better player to have in the squad over lucas (some would probably say that already!)

what i can see happening would be players like pacheco and particularly nemeth, leaving because they can't get into our team and turning out to be superstars..... then in a couple of years time when keane is 32 and no longer a first teamer, we could be crying out for someone like nemeth.......a clause like this would solve the problem of whether to give young players more time at the club to prove himself..... we could just let them prove themselves in other first teams instead.....

one player that could have used this system would have been partridge in my opinion.... he held on and on thinking that he would be good enough to make the first team eventually before falling off the radar.... about 3 seasons before he was eventually released by LFC, he went to coventry for a season and was their best player that year.... had he went to someone like blackburn the next year, then he could still be a prem player now for all we know....

for other teams, one player that seems to have developed a bit later than usual is darren fletcher. To be honest, i dont think he would have been a first team player for someone like everton or newcastle 3 years ago but now he looks like he could be scholes natural sucessor - in recent weeks, he has filled in for scholes when he was injured and kept anderson on the bench....

i also think that if united had the option to buy back phil neville over the last year or two, they would have - in my opinion the guy is a cunt but he had been playing well for everton in the middle of the park.....as well as carrick or hargreves in my opinion.....

Certainly Warnock. He's been fantastic for Blackburn & would've saved us a few quid.

Agree, he could easily give good competition to the left back!

Guthrie I don't agree with, he is far from the standard of the rest of our midfield, and he woulden't get a game.

But as the tankmeister says, it would be good to have a buy-back clause in some of the youngsters contracts, such as we have with Barragan.

Anelka was another one, replacing him with El Haj **** when helped us to 2nd in the league was one of Houlliers worst mistakes. Up there with taking Hamman off when we were cruising against Leverkusen in the Champions league QF
This city has two great football teams – Liverpool and Liverpool reserves

I always like Warnock, but he wanted regular football and he isn't top 4 quality. Whether or not he's better than what we've got is another argument.

If we had spent the £7m on a LB who was now a hit we wouldn't be having tis discussion. I is impossible to get it right with every signing, sometimes the playersyou bring in do not adjust and are worse than the ones you let go.

But what needs to be remembered is why you let the player go in the first place. I agree with the system you suggest but whether or not the buying club would accept that is another matter. But we did do it with Antonio Barragan so it's always a good option to think about, what ever the players age.

funnily enough I was wondering today what happened with Barragan, didnt his buy back option expire this summer gone?

hmm, with Warnock I always felt that defensively his play was suspect, but that could always be worked on, as you say he was young when we sold him and he has developed into a solid player. If we kept him though Im sure it wouldnt satisfy the posters out there who want the superstar Brazillain type full backs playing for us.

As for Guthrie, nah just cant see it with him, he is older than Lucas and seemed to be stuck in a bit of rut, think the move to the barcodes wasnt the best but guess he had to make a move.

Why are so many people writing Dossena off so soon? No doubt if Keane came from a foreign league and everyone hadn’t watched him play for years, then he too would be classed as useless. But people know he is a good player and will eventually come good, so why isn’t Dosenna given the same chance?

It’s early days and so far Dossena has contributed to a team sitting top of the table. Just remember how good Josemi started his Pool career and look what happened there.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I don't think this is a say against Dossena, he clearly haven't had a decent chance yet and he will hopefully improve. I just think this is a thread saying that at times we could do more to keep youngsters from the academy and perhaps being better at getting clauses in the sale of them.

Warnock has developed well since he left us, but I don't think he is quite up to the standard of being our first choice. But as a squad ´player he could def. make an impact today. And this summer it might have been cheaper buying him back if we had an option than buying Dossena that takes more time to settle.

I wasn’t exclusively replying to the initial post, but to a few of the points within as well as similar points in other threads.

Generally he’s already been labelled as a flop by the majority of fans and I just find it hard to believe so soon into his career.

I would say most say he has been poor to average in games, but have enough common sense to remember Agger and Skrtel when they joined the club, both of whom were utter ****e.

the system in spain of having technically the reserves in a competitive league is one that should be looked at here. lower clubs might not like falling to the conference for our reserves but it would increase the level of our players no end rather than sending them out on loan which sometimes is seen as a negative if they go on loan year after year

Agreed. The quality of games in the reserves is well below those of League One and the Championship. Having a second string side competing in the lower leagues would be far more beneficial to the players.

Obviously there'd be limits on how far they can be promoted, but the biggest hurdle will be selling it to the Football League and the likes of Macclesfield, Rotherham and Port Vale. What's in it for them?
