RAFA SET FOR NEW LIVERPOOL DEAL
    Jimmy Rice 07 November 2008
Rafa Benitez today spoke of his delight after hearing that talks on a new contract are set to begin.
Co-chairmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett contacted the manager this week to offer congratulations on the team's progress and discuss a new deal.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I received a phone call from Tom Hicks on behalf of George Gillett also. They are talking about a meeting with my advisors and a contract extension. This is very positive news.

"We decided to meet in the next week and now my advisors are in contact with them.

"We haven't spoken about the length of the contract but we talked and we all want to find a solution as soon as possible.

"For me it's easy. I want to stay here - I am where I want to be. It's very simple.

"My family and I know how good the fans have been with us. The club is going forward and we have the new stadium project. There are a lot of positive things.

"I want to stay here for a long time. Clearly I would like to be here when the new stadium opens. The other day I was joking that if they offered me a 20-year contract I'd be really pleased."

Benitez added: "The team is in a very good position, so if I do not have to talk about my contract from now on it will be perfect.

"The last two or three press conferences I have been asked and asked, so the stability is really important.

"The owners know we are doing well. The atmosphere is really good, we are at the top of the league and our Champions League group. The team is playing well."

Gillett and Hicks are known to be delighted with the team's form so far this term.

A statement on behalf of the pair said: "Rafa continues to do a great job, we are really pleased with the progress of the team and we look forward to talking to him and his advisors about extending his contract."

Rafa Benitez set for new Anfield deal - Liverpool FC latest
Nov 7 2008 Exclusive by Tony Barrett

RAFA Benitez is set to be offered a new contract by Liverpool.

Club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have informed the Reds boss they are happy with the work he is doing at Anfield and are ready to extend his current deal.

Benitez has 18 months left on his contract and is now looking for talks to be held at the earliest possible opportunity to stop any speculation about his future in its tracks.

Both co-owners have been in touch with the Spaniard during the last 48 hours and have told him that they are happy to enter into dialogue.

Benitez is delighted by the development and he today told the ECHO that he is expecting talks to begin within the next week.

“I think this is good news because Mr Hicks has been in touch with me on behalf of himself and George Gillett to tell me that they are ready to talk with my advisers about an extension to my contract.

“This is a positive movement and they gave me their word that they will make contact with my advisers within the next week.

“This is positive for the team because my idea is to have this concluded as soon as possible so we can stop talking about my situation in every press conference.

“I am where I want to be.

"That is the most important thing, and for me the key now will be the length of the contract.

Benitez also paid tribute to the club's supporters today and said: “The fans have been amazing to me.

"I am really happy here and my family is really happy here so to talk about this and to do it quickly would give a positive message.”

In a joint statement, Liverpool’s American owners said: “Rafa continues to do a great job.

“We are really pleased with the progress of the team and we look forward to talking to him and his advisers about extending his contract.”

Benitez insists he only sees his long-term future at Anfield and added: “We are talking about a new stadium in the future and I would like to be here when that opens.

“It is important to know who will be the manager in two or three years time so I think this is a positive movement and hopefully it will be done very, very quickly.

“Stability is always really important for any football club and it would be better if we can get this done so that the players can concentrate only on football.”

Since joining Liverpool from Valencia in the summer of 2004, Benitez has guided the club to two Champions League finals, including that famous night in Istanbul when the Reds came from three goals down against AC Milan to win their fifth European Cup.

He has also overseen success in the FA Cup, European Super Cup and Charity Shield.

And with Liverpool currently enjoying their best start to a league season in more than a decade, Benitez is keen to continue the work that begun four years ago when he quit Valencia’s Mestella for Anfield

Love it, hopefully we can soon concentrate on the on-field matters, which I think will only benefit the team
