    Central midfield worries?

Generally when you look at our squad it appears that the central area/spine is the strength. This is true in terms of personnel and it has held us together at times this season, however in the last two games I think we have started to see the limitations of the Alonso - Mascherano - Gerrard triumvirate. The weaknesses are in both attack and defense.

Defense: Both seem to leave the area in front of the centre backs free too often and teams on occasion exploit this and when one or more of our defenders (usually on the left hand side) push up we often get caught on the break. It is almost as if both players feel the other will be covering and they are not.
This is more of a problem with Agger in defense as he is more prone to moving up field meaning that the deep midfielders are more often the last line of defense.

Attack: None of the players regularly get into the area near the D where the ball so often come out to. Alonso is the most prone to be their but he is often slow to get there so when he does the opportunity is harder. Lampard (and in the past Scholes) have scored many goals making runs onto balls coming out into these areas. I think this is one of the areas where a more dynamic player (like for example Barry) would benefit our team.

Essentially I think our midfield is short of one more goal threat which we need in order to win the league. It is possible that the balance of the wide players is a contributory factor but I really think that with the exception of Christiano Ronaldo there are no wide players around who would significantly add systematically to how well we used the type of possession we seem to generate at the minute.

I kind of agree. It is not perfect, both Alonso and Mascherano have a habit of not picking up runners from deep- Maxi showed again last night that Mascher has a tendancy to ball watch. Tevez did the same to us earlier this season, ran from deep and nobody picked him up.

And in attack we need 1 of those 2 DM to make a late run into the box and just get in there and cause problems, this doesnt often happen as both players like to hang back outside the box

It's a fair point and a problem I've been thinking of for quite a while. We've got three great central midfielders who, as individuals, are all great players and deserve to be in the starting line up, but something is missing when all of them are on the pitch.

The problem isn't that glaring when Torres is in the team because he offers so much threat that it compensates for Alonso and Mascherano's lack of penetration in the final third, but we definitely looked more dangerous in a 4-4-2 this season.

If someone has to be on the bench when Torres is back, it should be Mascherano. Alonso just can't be dropped at the moment, and I don't like the midfield partnership of Gerrard and Mascherano. It lacks creativity and direction.

My take on it is that when both Alonso and Masch are in the middle they expect the other to be there. When one of them and gerrard are in the middle they know he'll never be back so they do their job properly.

I imagine this will be Lucas' role in the team?

Some good points in this thread.

I think our midfield is still a work in progress. Fairly often this year we've had teams backed against the wall with all of our midfield in advanced positions but there's rarely a thrust and we end up playing the ball round looking for an unlikely gap.

This is a fairly new scenario for us to be in because quite often we've played on the counter so hopefully with a bit more work we might see a bit more creativity through the middle.

Doesn't Alonso make those kind of runs for Spain? I'm sure I've seen him in the 18 yard box and scoring.

For Liverpool he seems to be consigned to taking long range shots (mostly off target).

Totally agree, Barry would certainly add more goals to the team then both Mascherano and Xabi.

3 goals for spain 20 odd caps, not a bad record, but not exactly enough to suggest he can get goals. His club record pretty much proves that he isn't a goal scorer. What freaks me out about him, he'll ping the ball 40 yards on a sixpence, but he'll miss a goal by a clear 10 yards from 20 yards out

steve takes the penalties though that would cut out a lot of his goals

Of the 9 goals he scored last season, 5 were pens, 2 were in 1 game against bolton and 1 was in the 6-0 thrashing of derby.

Not exactly a goal threat is he?

indirectly i would say he can be a threat with his delivery
