Bellamy and Pennant are examples of a manager buying players for a top Premiership side without the funds to get the players he actually wants or needs....nothing else
    then don't spend the money.

But what if he needs cover in those positions ?
I will always blame Moores and Parry.

riera has fairly shown pennant up in my mind. pennant has some smashin skills but he's never extended them from trapping the ball really well and the odd time he makes a bit of space for himself but riera is just as, if not more, skillfull and can get past people and get a cross in. benayoun makes more happen even if he's ****e a lot of the time. we don't need him. worst case scenario, sg on the right!

Pennant was a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" purchase for Rafa. We all know he wanted Alves for the right hand side but was priced out of that deal, so it was either Gerrard on the right for another year and all the usual palaver that comes with it, or buying an out and out right winger and giving the team a bit more balance and shape. In the end he went for one of the few notable (if I can use that word) RWs we could actually afford. If we got Pennant for £3.5m I don't think as many of us would be complaining about him as we are now, but at £7m odd he is an expensive flop.
