Liverpool reserves defender Jay Spearing has been promoted to the first team this week.

Reds reserves boss Gary Ablett told liverpoolfc.tv: "Jay is a player the manager really likes but the competition is strong in midfield. He is competing with some world class players so it's difficult to get in, but the things Jay has is passion, commitment and desire. If he can impress the manager then who knows?"

Also promoted are Dutch striker Jordy Brouwer and Martin Kelly.

Happy for Spearing. Hope he gets a chance sooner or later but I doubt it will be in this game. Brouwer though? Hmmm. Whilst he may have improved he doesn't look a top player to me. Haven't seen enough of Kelly to comment.

Good opportunity for Spearing, hope he makes the bench at least. Think he could be another Guthrie type player who could easily make a go of it at another Premiership side.

Martin Kelly was one of the 25 registered CL players so that makes sense but Brouwer is an odd one - Shaggy'll be pleased.
