Why!?!?!?!?! dear god why!??? when we defend corners at home (or even away for that matter) do we have every single ****ing player in the frigging box.......why why why do we do it - i have never know any team at any level, to have every man in the box to defend ****ing corners.
I can understand it some times, granted if it was 1-0, dying moments of the cup final you might thing get everyone back to defend it and get rid. But we do it for every single corner, every single time, regardless of the situation and it ****s me off
even if we are at home and the score 10 nil to us, or we are losing 10 nil or its 0-0 against Accrington Stanley in the first 30 seconds. We have everyone back deep.
I could understand it when we used to bring heskey or crouch back to defend, i could even understand us bringing torres back now and then cause he is decent in the air and has the pace to support the attack if we break quickly
this isn't just a rant on yesterdays game, but yesterdays game has cause me to rant a bit today
so I will use it as an example
roughly the 70th min mark, west ham got two corners in a row. The first one, we had everyone including yossi benayoun the smallest man on the pitch and someone who hardly has a spring in his step that means he leaps up and attacks the ball with his head, is in the box defending a corner when we are at home drawing 0-0 in an important game against a west ham team that didn't look like they wanted to score anyway - why have everyone back, why not stick someone even yossi, further up the pitch so if or when the ball is cleared it will either break to our player and we might spring a counter attack, or at the very least it goes to one of their defenders but we have someone out there to cause problems, put them under pressure but no - like yesterday the ball got cleared and their centre backs had time to control, compose and start another attack that led to another corner.
I just don't understand why we need everyone back - esp with someone like hyypia playing who will win 99% of headers from corners on his own anyway. - What happens if the corner gets knocked in and reina collects easily and looks up and we could have a break on, nothing happens, why? cause there is noone outside our own ****ing box.
I just never see any other team anywhere do this as much as we do - in fact i have seen teams, in similar situations leave two or three players up the field, cause ultimatley this means the opposition then have to bring back and makes sure they have about 4 defenders covering
funnily enough, just to show i'm not all doom and gloom - iirc we have recently, for some bizarre reason, out of the blue, decided to keep on guy up front on the half way line, i don't know if benitez told him to do it, or the player just thought **** it i'm staying here, but he did it a few times in the game and it was such a shock that everyone was saying ****ing hell we have finally kept one guy up front - now i can't remember exactly cause this season all the games seems to be rolling into one, i must be getting old but iirc that player was robbie keane and who as a result, scored on the break when we were defending a corner!!
- yes rafa, we didn't have every single player back in our own box, we hit them on the break when defending a corner and as a result of leaving someone up front we had the space for keane to score!!!!
so it does ****ing work......i can't find the clip but i think it was against West Brom??
