Benitez Turns Down New Liverpool Deal

Is this the story Collymore was on about????

Benitez Turns Down New Liverpool Deal
Press reports in England suggest that Rafa Benitez has rejected Liverpool's opening offer as negotiations for his new contract begin.

Rafa Benitez has said no to Liverpool's initial £12 million offer in negotiations for his new contract, reports the News of the World. The Spaniard is holding out for improved terms after the Anfield hierarchy put forward a two year extension to the manager.

The new deal was planned to last until 2012, and would have upped Benitez's salary from £3.5 million a year to just under £4 million for the rest of his time with the club.

The Liverpool manager is keen for his wages to match those earnt by his rival managers at the other so-called 'Big Four' clubs. Both Manchester United's Alex Ferguson and Arsenal's Arsene Wenger are reputed to earn £4.5 million a year.

Talks will continue, but it is understood to be these wage demands that are causing a stumbling block, with the club's owners arguing that Liverpool have not won another trophy since Benitez's last contract renewel in 2006.

Benitez also apparently wanted a five year deal, as he has vowed to remain on Merseyside and ignore the efforts of other clubs, most notably Real Madrid, to prise him away from Anfield.

    Negotiations are expected to continue.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

A top player these days earns over 5m a year and you're talking 20m on top in transfer fees, yet we're quibbling over giving the guy who holds it all together 4.5m a year?

Will put us back a few years if he leaves and cost us a bundle in transfer fees for the new manager to get a team together he likes.

    Show him the money FFS!

Who is to say that this is not what Rafa wanted all along. Club give him a contract, he rejects it, stating they don't value him enough, he leaves, fans blame the board. Allowing him to leave and he goes and manages Real.

Or this is bull**** sprouted just to sell papers as times are hard and people are not buying papers anymore.

He should get what he wants.

Providing he wins the title this season...

This confuses me a little, Rafa's never been the type who's motivated by money and i wouldnt have had him down as being that big an ego that he has to have wages matching manager x or manager y.

If you're offered £4m p/a, is another £500k really something that should make the difference between saying yes and saying no?

If this story is true, i'd be quite concerned about what his motivation is.

Load of bollocks. How could the press have got wind of this? Unless it was leaked and if so by who?

              I think you're right V.

We all know what the NOTW is called during the week and every week that goes by with us still top and fighting for the title, gives them more motivation to try and throw us off course.

Coco could still hold a grudge and have leaked it.

Hicks as had issues with him in the past and could have leaked it.

Things like this leaking is unfortunately not an unimaginable for us anymore.

Im always pretty dismissive of this stuff, it doesnt normally bother me. But every day we have either the notw/s*n or daily hate mail starting a new **** stirring story about us. Every ****ing day now.

The only way this story could be accurate is if someone at the very highest level leaked it. That lies with just 3 or 4 people and if thats the case then Rafa and everybody involved will probably know who leaked it. If its true then its **** stirring as private negotiations should never be leaked and Rafa's camp won't be happy. Do we really need this now? Im sick of the ****e leaks coming out of our club, its become way too frequent. Although in saying that i don't really believe the story. Bull****

I think it will be either a/ the length of the contract or b/ the demands for complete control of the academy etc. that cause problems. I imagine that Rafa probably would like the extra cash but probably wouldn't make it teh decisive factor - it is entirely in the interests of the owners and potentially Parry to have this slant put on the delay in the press IMO.

i think he would accept any terms for total control of the whole club
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

So far this is the only link I can find an others are talking about it being in the Mail - along with the fact it isn't in his other article I would guess not.
