Rafa pissed off with the press

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has hit out at claims he has demanded a massive pay rise in negotiations over a new contract.

The Anfield chief, in Holland preparing his side for Tuesday's final Champions League group D match with PSV Eindhoven, is furious that his contract extension talks are being depicted as money-orientated.

Benitez claims he instructed his agent, holding talks with owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett over a new deal to replace his current contract which runs out in 18 months, not to talk about money first.

Benitez initially wanted to explain about Robbie Keane's future and insisted the Irishman would not be sold in the next transfer window.

But his own future at Anfield has become the main talking point following claims that contract talks have stalled over cash demands.

Benitez, however, said: "I was surprised by what I read. Surprised that I have seen that I was demanding more money. That is not true.

"I told my agent when he went into the talks to not talk about money, the question was about the length of the contract, and after that it was my role. The last question was about the money.

"So when you see things said (about money), it means people are either not telling the truth or that people have very bad information or they want to create a mess.

"I was very disappointed with this. I say again, it is not true. I was not asking for anything, just telling my advisors to go to the meeting and hear what they (the owners) want. The owners were talking about an extension.

"Again I say, people have very bad information. Hopefully it will be resolved sooner rather than later, but I do not know when.

"I was pleased with the first meeting, and more so in the second meeting, that was better. Again I am very clear, people are trying to create a mess and I do not know why."

Initial claims were that the owners are prepared to only offer a two-year extension, with Benitez clearly wanting more.

He said: "We are talking about more (years) now, and we are happy with the talks."

Benitez will put aside his contract talks to try to claim top spot in group D, which will assure a home second leg in the first knock-out stage after Christmas.

But Keane's future, following claims that he could be sold in January, was made clear by Benitez.

He said: "Robbie's future is to be ready, to score goals and to work for the team.

"In football we know we have signed a good player, you cannot guarantee anyone's position. In some games he has to work hard.

"The challenge is there for him. When you sign a player for a lot of money, that is it. He becomes another player in the squad and he has to fight for his position.

"I do not know whether his confidence has been affected, we will see tomorrow.

"Clearly he has to show character, and show you are a good player. When we decide to sign him we knew he was a good player.

"I do not need to talk too much on this. A lot of top clubs have very expensive players, they have four of them on the bench every week.

"He has to know he needs to fight and work hard. But he has a future here, why not?"

Benitez added: "I have a lot of patience, with everybody. He will be here after the January window, it is not my idea to sell him.

"We are always working with the players, explaining and clarifying what they need to do for the team. Robbie is no different."

Benitez will make changes for the PSV clash, with Brazilian youngster Lucas expected to start the match, despite criticism from fans in recent weeks.

Lucas was booed by the Anfield fans during the recent home game with Fulham, and Benitez said: "Lucas is a clever player with character.

"And he can look at the fact that we are top of the table (in England) and he has been a part of that.

"I do not like to hear my players booed by our own fans, we want to progress together towards our goals. Lucas has explained that the fans are anxious because of our position and the desire to win the league and I can understand that."

The Brazilian midfielder said: "It has been a difficult time for me, particularly in the Fulham game.

"I know I have to improve my performances, but we are top of the league and qualified for the next stage in Europe.

"But I understand the fans, they are anxious and want to see us win, it has been a very long time since Liverpool won the title, and I want to help them end that wait."

Nice one Rafa, straight away he puts the fans right after this piece of bull**** in the press, how the **** they can claim to know the in's and out's of the contract negotiations is beyond me.

Either they totally made up Rafa's so called high financial contractual demands, or someone on one side of the talks wanted to muddy the waters somewhat, managers usually sign contracts without too much fuss, so i don't see why there should be any long delay, or any short delay for that matter, unless one side wants that.

I see the Daily Mail, with exactly the same story about Robbie, have practically called Rafa a liar. "Keane definitely still in my plans, insists unconvincing Benitez"

Their interpretation - Robbie's up for sale, but Rafa doesn't want to upset him yet, by telling him and Benny's going as well, 'cos we said so in the middle of November'.

I think Slur Alex might have the right idea....Ban the media, and then you don't get misquoted or misinterpreted, particularly when you're Brahms and Lizt.

we need to unite from this as a club if we are really to focus and challenge now - I know we all get pissed off and people get frustrated and moan at players or the managers decsion, thats always going to happen - but right now we are top - and the press are soooooo out to get us it's untrue - I hate syaing there is a media witch hunt aimed at liverpool, but this year there really is - even speaking to a blue nose mate at footie last night he said he was shocked at how many 'bad' press stories there had been about us over the last week or so - it's shocking, it's everyday another story and it won't stop until we implode, drop points and then press can turn round and say...."I told you so" - it's time to create this siege mentality, that everyone is against us but we are going to stick together, come out fighting and be stronger than ever and ****ing win the league! Right now, the players(be it lucas, babel or gerrard or reina) and most importantly the manager - need us, the fans, more than ever.
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Liverpool: The truth about Rafa's contract negotiations

The most common concern of all the correspondence I receive from Liverpool fans on the site is in relation to Rafa Benitez’ contract negotiations at Anfield. There seems to be a lot of conflicting stories and speculation doing the rounds at the moment and a large number of you have been asking me if I know what is really going on.

Having spoken to some of the people involved and - without revealing details that are essentially private - there are things that can be said about these negotiations because there is a lot of rubbish and mis-information being published in newspaper stories: often with an ulterior motive, sometimes without.

Some of these reports have suggested that money is the main obstacle. However, according to sources close to George Gillett Jr, there have been two meetings so far and the subject of money has not yet featured in the discussions – or to put it another way, it is not something that Rafa’s agent and lawyer have wanted to get in to yet.

According to people close to Benitez, the next meetings should take place very soon; but according to sources close to the American owners, there is no rush. And, even though money side of things is way down Rafa’s list of priorities, the issue of money will have to be raised before very long: probably at the next meeting.

At the moment the respective positions of both parties is typical of how things are done in these kinds of contract negotiations: according to the same sources, Gillett is holding out to see what Benitez demands, while the coach is waiting to see what the Americans are willing to offer.

At this stage, the only thing to have been discussed in detail is the duration of the contract and, according to Gillett, the Americans would be happy to offer a 3 year extension and I have the impression that this will be accepted by Benitez. So, in principle, the first step of an agreement has been reached.

Once the money issue has been settled, there will be other matters that will need to be resolved, but the American owners are very optimistic about the situation and they think that they will be able to deliver the renewal of Rafa Benitez’ contract as a timely Christmas present for all concerned with Liverpool Football Club.

It really is a pain in the ass to keep reading these non stories, let's hope that it just makes everyone at the club even more determined to succeed.

Thats nasty comparing anyone to Dunk!! He seemed to get Rafas contract spot on with Rafa coming out after and pretty much saying the same things as Ballague did. I do think Rafa uses him but not as much as Ballague would like us to believe.

I saw this on SSN before I read it here.

In fact, Rafa said it himself in his news conference yesterday.
