    Lucas Neill - Speculation

No quotes, so make of it what you want:

Benítez may renew his bid for Neill
    By Oliver Kay

BLACKBURN ROVERS are braced for a renewed approach from Liverpool for their captain, Lucas Neill, when the transfer market reopens in January.

The Merseyside club failed with a bid to sign Neill shortly before the transfer window closed on August 31, but Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, has no intention of giving up his pursuit of the Australia defender, whom he firmly expects to sign either in January or when his contract at Ewood Park expires at the end of the season.

Neill’s hopes of moving to Anfield will hinge on Mark Hughes, the Blackburn manager, and his board. Hughes has indicated that he would prefer to lose him on a free transfer next summer rather than to accept a cut-price fee in January.

Liverpool offered little more than £1.5 million in August, when they also discussed the possibility of a part-exchange deal involving Stephen Warnock, and while it remains to be seen whether such a fee would be enough to prompt Blackburn to sell, Benítez is eager to add to his defence.

Liverpool are unconcerned by a potential compensation battle with St-Etienne over their bid to sign Nabil El Zhar, the Morocco Under-20 forward. El Zhar signed a four-year contract with Liverpool in August, but the French club insist that they are entitled to a transfer fee.

Really hope we fail in our bid to sign Neill - I'd rather not see him in red.

But he'd offer good cover for our defence and particularly Finnan at right back who'll need a rest sooner or later.

He has vast experience in the EPL and I think he'd be a good squad addition, if he can keep away from thoise red cards!

Pish journalism. Hoped we'd be chasing better things in the January window (Alaves or equivalent). Not many folk outside of Aussie-land that want him to be fair.

Happy enough with the squad for this season to be honest - lack of cover for Finnan is my only concern!

He's also better in the air than Finnan. I think Rafa sees that as a real weakness in Finnan's game which might be why this has resurfaced immediately after the Bolton game where Finnan didn't exactly do a great job on Campo for their second goal. I certainly think it's an area teams will try to exploit.

I don't care that much for Neill but he would add something to the squad.

I might as well say it - I think sometimes Finnan gets a little overhyped around here.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I am a finnan fan but I do agree that teams sometimes try to exploit his weakness in the air and Neill does not have this problem.

I have watched him a bit this season and he has been very good,I havent seen anyone get the best of him and I think he would be a good signing.

After a few games of the Premiership season, I think it's pretty clear that we are fine for cover in the CB positions, but really need cover for the Full back positions.

We don't have the same defensive integrity when Riise is unavailable, and we need cover for Finnan. Therefore, a player like Neill might be suitable, as he can cover both those positions.

You may have a point - Finnan is no Rob Jones. However Riise is hardly proficient in the air either, but then he hasn't been exploited recently.

IMO a CB/goalkeeper should have been attacking that Campo goal. Full backs rarely are great in the air, and it usually doesn't matter as it's not essentially their job to clear headers in the center of the box. Hard weakness for the opposition to attack IMO. We have for some reason not been great in dealing with balls into the box this season. My thought is its down to the inconsistent selection in defence, but then maybe i'm just being a media whore.

In fact don't get me started on Full backs - i've always had a deep rooted loathing for them. Arguably the least effective players on the park. They can be excused for defending, and there's not a great deal of expectation on their attacking play either. They can have average/solid games and get lauded for it. But in KEY positions like CM, if your a bit off your game, like Alonso perhaps started the season, then you get vilified.

You need solid Full Backs, good positions sense, and good outlet going forward. But i agree to an extent they are in general over-hyped for having solid/average games!

Good points about Finnan - he has a glaring weakness in the air.

                      I agree.

If he has a weakness in his game it's obviously in the air.

Can anyone who's seen a lot of Alves play comment on his ability in the air?

Riise isn't bad in the air although he does often head the ball into danger areas. He's certainly better than Finnan in the air and better than the competition for left back (Warnock and Aurelio).

I've only seen him play a little but I don't think he's up to much in the air. Then again, he was supposedly being a bought instead of Pennant, i.e. as right wing not right back.

Don't want to him at the club, people are already complaining that we are signing too many average players (Bellamy, Pennant?), I'd prefer to see us hold out and maybe get a free transfer on a RB to see us through to the summer, and then go for Alves, or another RB that isn't a cut price option.
