To keep with the spirit of festive period

    A bit of a positive thread :

I was just reading about Michael Owen statement and the reaction to it from the Geordie fans.

This got me thinking; all things considered we’ve done OK since our fall from the summit.

Newcastle where challenging for the title and getting in to the Champions league, they’ve been a relegation candidates for the last, god knows how many years now.

Leeds, well don’t need to say too much.

    Blackburn, mid-table mediocrity.

Arsenal 4 years of nothing (OK CL footie, but no trophies)

Go back further Man U relegated, Villa relegated, Forrest relegated.

We are now in for our first genuine title challenge since we won it. Now we’ve not been great, in fact we’ve been **** for most of the season, you can put this down to our closest rivals also being **** or a general improvement in the standard this year, but we are there. It’s not been a bad baron spell we’ve still won more trophies than 95% of the rest of the league put together while we have been in the wilderness.

dont think we have been in the wilderness as you say and yes we have won a lot of trophies since but we have spent big money year in and year out and we do expect to challenge every year for something on that basis
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

All of the clubs I've mentioned spent big too. We've not been the top side in our division for a long, long time, to me that's the wilderness. I know what you mean though.

But, spending big doesn't guarantee anything and being at the top normally means you fall down a lot further than we have.

i suppose having been top for so long we built up such a hugh fan base that merchandising etc has brought the club a lot of money - every year. also the name has still managed to attract some top players...

spending doesnt guarentee success but it helps
