Half way point - Our top three performers ?

    For me...

    1) Xabi Alonso. After two seasons of tepid displays an erratic passing range and spells on the bench, we finally have the Xabi of 2005/6 back. It's almost as if the summer transfer farce gave him the kick up the arse he needed. He is now brimming with confidence, dictating the tempo of games and even chipping in with the odd goal or assist. Everything good we do seems to go through Alonso these days, keep it up lad.

    2) Pepe Reina. Quite simply one of the top three or four goalkeepers in world football. Ruthlessly consistent in all departments, not least his distribution. A future LFC skipper for sure. He is crucial to our title charge.

    3) Steven Gerrard. By his exceptionally high standards, it probably has not been Stevie's greatest ever first half of the season, but he is our top scorer with eleven goals and as usual has consistently dragged us kicking and screaming to put points on the board in the league and guide us to the top of our Champions League group. It might seem ridiculously harsh, but to win the title, I think we'll need Stevie to slip into fifth gear over the second half of the season.

Think the threat of being sold in the summer has given him the kick up the ass he has needed. Think he now knows that he needs to peroform to stay as barry is waiting in the wings in rafa's mind. Player of the season so far by a mile!

I will agree with that lot. You could possibly add Arbeloa. He has improved after a really poor start to the season.

Or he's playing for a move, persuading suitors to pay what we demand. Hope not.

Arbeloa is one, Alonso and I'd say Kuyt, except when he was put up front. I think these are the 3 playing well for them, i.e. on form. Kind of expect goals and the lot from Stevie but he'd be there in lue of Kuyt by objective measures.

                          Pepe Reina
                          Xabi Alonso
                          Steven Gerrard

I really think this season Pepe has stepped up another level. I think he has been exceptional since he got here but this is the first season when this has been widely acknowledged by fans of other teams and I think that says something about how excellent he was at the start of the season.

Xabi has resumed his position as the heartbeat of the team. Somehow the falling out of the summer seems to have resulted in Rafa re-finding his faith in him but possibly with him given more freedom now.

Gerrard has pulled enough games out of the hat to deserve third place but I think a large number of players have been good enough to challenge him.

in that order although special mention to sami hyypia who has done better than i thought he would in the games he's played. stevie starting to come good again after IMO a sluggish start to season. and finally kyut who is impressing with his form this year.
