The reasons this is so shocking are that we are talking the absolute role model for English football, in every sense, both as a player and a man. For everything that Joey Barton has got wrong, Stevie has got it right, in buckets. It's also shocking coming just hours after he was getting the praise of everyone for his performance at NUFC and at last the pundits are backing us to win the League. Talk about timing.

Reading the threads on here and the "bickering", it's clear you have two types of argument and both make sense.

Firstly yes of course Steve is allowed to enjoy his nights out and unfortunately in Clubs and Pubs anything can always kick off. I suspect this was all over in seconds and I trust (hope) that all Stevie did was elbow the feller in a moment of madness. I hope that it was one of his mates who did the damage with the glass when things kicked off. In my day this sort of thing happened in every town in the country and I can understand why some people on here are playing it down and even making a joke about it.

Secondly though because of who we are talking about - not the guy made good from Huyton - but one of the most successful and famous sports-stars in the world, this incident is making headlines in every country in the world. In one fell swoop our Club captain has fallen off his pedestal and the repercussions haven't even begun yet. None of us know what they will be - and I'm talking football not the crazy suggestions that this will bring the Club down. Utter nonsense.

What we need now is a statement from Stevie and very quickly before this story takes on a life of its own. We need a huge apology for the injury caused to the victim, without of course making any admission of guilt. We need a huge apology to the Club for the embarrassment and disruption caused. We need the Club to come out and say the matter will be discussed internally and any necessary action taken behind closed doors. We also need the Club to come out and support Stevie and remind everyone of his outstanding record as a Club captain and his behaviour on and off the field for both Club and country.

As for Stevie himself he needs our support and he will get it. I can only imagine what the last 36 hours have been like for him. I bet he's a very worried feller right now.

Sorry this is so long - but I was trying to sum up where we are now.
Top post. Sums up exactly how I am feeling about this.

Spot on The Club needs to step in and "Manage" this situation quickly. As for Stevie, like I have said not big nor clever but he is a man not a boy and he will already know that.

Two weeks docked should be enough for him to realise to not make this mistake again. Rafa and Sammy will kick his arse into shape and this might gee up the rest of the players to win the title. Siege mentality for Gerrard, he will be targeted by Stoke fans, Everton fans, Scum fans, every single fan and every single London based journo. Perform like he has so far this season and even that bit more and we will win the title.

A carefully worded statement written by his solicitor and advisors without any admission of guilt would have no impact on the court case. In fact it would probably act in his favour if he showed some remorse.

I was going to reply to that load of long winded drivel above, but I can't be arsed.

I will say this, that being charged doesn't = guilty, and neither the club or Gerrard should be making any statments as part of an ongoing legal case.

I'm sure he'll surive the trauma. That's if he's even found guilty, which we don't know until we have the facts.

I doubt that will stop the hysterical drama queens going into one.

Actually his post was well thought out, clear and talks a lot of sense as was indicated by the several posters commending him on it and no doubt others to come

There's obviously some sort of media silence being imposed. I asked my mate in the dog section how Stevie was doing and all he would say was "rough."

                            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
