Do a certain amount of places have to be allocated to certain positions or could we drop a midfielder to get Sami in? If there's no restrictions then Pennant out Sami in for me.

The restriction is in terms of homegrown players I think.

I think the likely result is something along the lines of Degen out, Sami in. Unless we sign Heskey who might swap for Pennant.

No Insua either...worth taking Aurelio (injury prone) out for him, or Dossena, who has yet to fully flourish?

Am i right in that we can only make 2 changes to the squad??

If Skrtel is back fit again then why does he need to be included??
Rafa decided the 3 CB's plus whoever as cover was good enough for the group stages then I don't see why a couple of normal performances against average Prem sides should change that.
Sami is (unfortunetley) no where near good enough anymore against the likes of Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea etc... (IMO)
Keep him fresh for some Prem games to rest Carra or Agger/Strtel it's not as if Real Madrid are going to lump long balls up to Raul all day is it.
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Degen - Insua (Degen has been injured too long and would require too many games to work his way into the CL squad properly)
N'Gog - Sami (N'Gog will not start, and Torres/Keane/Kuyt/Babel should be enough to cover the forward slots)

i wouldnt want a new player to be finding his feet at this stage of the champions league

                    Course it is.

I'd swap Degen for Sami then. Can't really see him getting a game in the CL anywhere along the way.

Insua is away for a month though, this is probably why and perhaps he will be added later.

This is the current list - i.e. from the group stages. He can be added in the changes which have to be submitted by the 2nd of Feb or not at all.

On a side note does anyone remember when there was talk that Real had submitted a list with Diarra and Huntelaar on it? Having checked the date I presume they did that in order to start an appeal somewhere to get to be allowed to add two players from UEFA cup teams rather than one - has anything happened in that regard?

Sami has to come in, as he has featured regularly this season, Insua has moved up the peaking order and also has to come in. Degan and Ngog are the obvious ones to make way as neither has had much game time and both positions can be covered by players already in the squad. Right back by Arbeloa Carragher and Darby, while our system suggests we'll only play one out and out striker Torres, with Keane and Kuyt able to provide back up.

The interesting one will be if Pennant leaves as we have to fill his place with a homegrown player (either from reserves or by signing someone)
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
