Stadium should be cheaper to build??

With the rumours of a takeover from a middle eastern family who made their money in construction this got me thinking about the new stadium. I think the credit crunch could work in our favour where the stadium is concerned, if the new owners have the cash.

Steel prices hit a record high last summer of $1,200 per tonne, at the moment the prices is around $400 per tonne.

I remember years ago when the estimated cost the stadium rose from £70m to £150m (in the press) the reason given was the massive increases in the price of steel...now that the prices has fallen surely that's good for us??

It was an argument raised by someone in the current set up I believe when defending the latest construction delays.

Undoubtedly the price of the stadium should have plummeted but the ability to raise the cash to pay for it will have also fallen.

Would you accept a fall back to the old Koptalk days of vague elliptical comments or possibly even a riddle or two?

It'll not get any cheaper to build the stadium (steel costs, negotiating the price with the contractor etc..) the problem is that it is because the banks are scared to loan out money that it is so cheap, when the banks are prepared to loan again naturally the prices will rise because the people will actually have the money to buy the materials etc..

So we'd be sat very very pretty now if we had owners who had the cash rather than rely on borrowed money which brings us back to Moores and Parry

It depends on if the new owner(s) have the cash, if they do they could follow what happened at Chelsea and give the club an interest free loan.

Rumour has it they are worth £9bn? It depends how much of that is "paper" money

The ideal solution would be that they provide the capital to pay for the costs and then use their expertise and contacts to get the ground built quickly and on budget.

With the extra incoming being generated the owners could then take a cut of the profits out and with the increased value a new and bigger stadium would add to the club they would never lose money..
