I would say that Real paid the minimum fee that was required to convince LFC to sell. Rafa wanted money for his players, but we were not in a position to bargain for anymore. Mardrid would not have paid anymore as they probably never had any intention in keeping him. They already had an all star forward line and just saw him as a why of making a profit.
In hindsight we could have done what Villa are doing with Gareth Barry, and risked losing him for nothing, as Villa are. Maybe we would have still won the champions league without Luis Garcia, and maybe that victory would have convinced Michael to sign an extension. We'll never know.
