Various Brazil sides have used a similar narrow midfield formation, kind of a 4-2-2-2 style, with the likes of Cafu and Roberto Carlos (at the time), bombing forward.

Could we line up like Spain?

Personally I still think we would struggle to breakdown teams intent to sit back and keep 10 men behind the ball and nothing much would change. Things would just get a bit too congested in the middle. Just like us, all Spain’s best performances come against teams who are willing to attack.
Although I do love watching the Spanish play. As entertaining and flamboyant and the Brazilians are, I’d much rather watch lovely, controlled passing football like last night. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

That’s what I was wondering. Are there any fans from England here who actually wanted Spain to win last night?Originally posted by Matt View PostI felt truly Spanish last night, watching David Villa carve up Jagielka for the goal brought joy to my heart

Think they played that formation Tuesday night with Maicon and Marcelo providing the width.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostVarious Brazil sides have used a similar narrow midfield formation, kind of a 4-2-2-2 style, with the likes of Cafu and Roberto Carlos (at the time), bombing forward.

I must admit I wanted Spain to win. However, if Stevie G was playing for England that might have changed. Desperately wanted Torres to score as well.Originally posted by RedReet View PostThat’s what I was wondering. Just on a side note about last nights game, but how good was our Xabi Alonso!! Pissed all over Barry IMO.
Alonso played really well but did get caught on the ball a couple of times. I bet Wenger watched the game and is absolutely gutted he didn't sign him."Its not about the long ball or the short ball, its about the right ball." Bob Paisley

I wouldn't have been bothered whatever the result really but any international I watch I'm primarily hoping that our players give a good account of themselves.Originally posted by RedReet View PostThat’s what I was wondering. With no LFC representation in the England side last night I found myself feeling very little affinity with them.

Spain.Originally posted by RedReet View PostHow about if it was a qualifier and Gerrard still wasn't playing?
I'm not arsed about England but normally I would prefer them to win.
Last night was the most anti-England I've ever felt. I was 100% behind Spain. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

That spain side plays the most sublime football on the planet at the moment -at either club or international level. The midfield is awesome, Xavi never gives the ball away yet plays incisive forward passes all day. He is incredible at what he does. I think the key is that it's full of playmakers..all great passers with great vision and quick thinking.
The quick one touch passing pulls the opposition to shreds and we'll never play like that with the players we have. As good as Gerrard is he doesn't have the control or precision of a Xavi or Iniesta.Last edited by BG1973; 12-02-09, 12:48 PM.

Yup, returning injury free is always the absolute #1 priority although I got a bit carried away last night wanting Torres to rip Terry a new one.Originally posted by RedReet View Post
I think David Pleat summed up the feeling after Alonso went in quite hard on Carrick: "Thats the kind of challenge you expect from a Liverpool player tacking a Utd player".
