Thankfully Arsenal are a long way behind but I can see Villa catching us too with that side we had out today.

Will winning the Champions League be enough for you now that United have won 18 too? We're better than when Houllier left but still not good enough.
If we keep pushing it means United can not rest players in the league for their five trophy assault. How would we feel if a fixture pile up ****ed the mancs up and we weren't there to capitalise?

    Push all the way.

Most successfull team in Europe since Rafa has been in charge.

One win, runners up, semis and first knock out. Plus whatever happens this year.

I've loved the European runs too, every red has. And i agree that they've helped financially.

We're not 'the number 1 team in europe' though, those Uefa rankings mean sod all. Trophies matter, uefa rankings dont.
I did reply to your point, and there is a great value to being number one in Europe. It has won us a European Cup, brought in lots of money and helped us keep our players and get more world class players in.

Which of those points havent brought value to the club? I'm not saying its the best achievement but I dont think you should totally dismiss it when it has helped the club so much.

You're really missing the point mate. How ARE we even 'number 1' in europe? We're clearly not. We're not even number 1 team in england.

Uefa and Fifa rankings are bull**** mate, nobody takes them seriously.

The only thing that matters in football is trophies.

Clubs dont put 'certificates' of being 'number 1 team in europe' in their trophy cabinets

I think you'll find that WINNING the CL is what contributed to us being ranked 'number 1 team in europe' rather than the other way around.

How has it won us a European Cup exactly?

Haha bit pedantic that last point, but suppose I shouldnt really try and write a reply first thing in the morning before my coffee. I obviously didnt mean we won a Euro Cup due to being ranked first by UEFA, if I confused you please accept my apologies.

In my eyes since Rafa has taken over we have been the best team in Europe, pretty much beat all the top sides and have had wonderful runs.
You may disagree but in this overall discussion it is a minor point and not one I really want to spend endless replies discussing.

My point was how spoilt some of our fans have become. Clearly some of that is due to United about to equal our league record, while others seem to only support us if we are successful.

I dont agree that trophies are the only things that matter in football to all supporters. For me they are a huge bonus but if we never won another one it wouldnt effect my love for the club.
Its clearly not a big factor for a lot of supporters or everyone would be supporting United instead of teams who constantly struggle for survival.

Seems we are both missing each others points, but on here thats just the run of the mill

I really think that this 'nothing to play for' attitude is a shame. I know the chances are small but the only way to build the right mentality is to fight for every point in every game. There is money and ease of qualification for the CL in getting better finishing positions and there is no reason at all why we can't at least aim for second.

It would be good if the run in was to sharpen the likes of Lucas, Babel, Ngog, Insua etc. into genuine first team options for next year but I don't think effectively throwing games in an effort to develop them and or save players for the CL is a great strategy.

I think this is clear, and is obviously reflected in our number one ranking. I'm not arsed about the ranking itself, but I am immensely proud of the results and performances that have put us there.

There is no doubt whatsoever that we have been the best side in European competition since Benitez took over. No-one can boast the sequence of scalps we can. It's been an amazing ride and I cannot believe some fans are still so flippant when it comes to Europe. Yes the Prem is the priority and the one we all want the most, but to dismiss our European glory is demented and wrong.

I still dont get the 'best team in europe' thing though, i dont think we can make that claim when we're struggling to finish 2nd in the PL.

Maybe its the wording, but would you agree we have been the strongest most competitive team in the Champions League since Rafa became our manager?
Will agree we arent the best team in Europe if you include domestic league status etc.

Yeah i do agree about our performances in the CL. But that'd be a bit like saying a team which has a great FA Cup record is the best team in England

We are without doubt one of the top performing sides in Europe, when it comes to the Champions League. I couldnt honestly say we're the 'best team' though.

It's simple - we're the best performing team in European competition. There can't be a single LFC fan on the planet who genuinely believes we are the best team in Europe per sé - we'd have to win our league before we can even entertain that. The point I assume Woobus (and UEFA) is making is that we, as I said, have been the best-performing team in European competition since Rafa arrived.

                        Not to be sniffed at.

This is surely a wind up - united are about to run into some bad form imo. Even if they don't, even if they drop just 3 points after we have beaten them it is game on.

This is a wind up surely.
                          Really?

Yup its been a great achievement in my eyes and its finally brought some real respect back to our club. Really angers me when Liverpool fans say they dont care about the Champions league and only the Premiership, and now fans giving up on the league when it looks very hard for us.

No doubt they were the ones who turned over or left the bar/match at half time in 2005.

That's my point. And i totally agree that it's not to be sniffed at - i'd just rather win trophies and have Uefa and their cronies rate us at whatever number they like.

Not remotely what i was saying, but never mind.

Winning the CL is great, i love it. Being 'ranked' number 1 by Uefa, means sod all to me really, if there arent trophies being won.
