Whatever happened to pass and move?

So ive waited to calm down before posting after yesterdays game which was a truly awful performance.

The number of players who were happy to stand still with a man marking them was a joke. Whoever had the ball was normally restricted to passing sideways or backward. Once the ball was released we'd have another player in an ineffective area of the pitch. Players dont seem to work hard enough for each other (cept dirk) I get the distinct impression players are under strict instructions on how to play. We try to play possession football and keep the ball from the opposition which i agree with but without sharp, one touch football (with some movement off the ball) we cant break down a team who sit back (like we do ourselves in europe). Our players do not have the skill to play one touch football. Kuyt and babel have the worst control ive ever seen.

Players have strict areas of the pitch which they marshall but cannot go beyond that. This is fine for a holding player and centre backs but not two holding players and most of the defence. In Rafas defence i think he wants the full backs to bomb on (sorta wing backs) hence the two holding midfielders to cover unfortunately the dossena and degen signings have not worked out and aurellio and arbeloa are not wings backs (good players though arbeloas had a good season for me)

Are players allowed to take on a man? its rare to see our players take on a man. Rieras debut i thought we'd got a capable player, he took the piss out wes brown that day, now he rarely tries. El Zhar looks capable of beating a man. babel has pace but cant dribble where he wants to.

Corners, take gerrard off them he should be in the box goin for headers a la ronaldo, im sure he used to be a threat years a go.

sorry guys this turned into a rant

just seen your name thingy chilli - has AF11 ****ed off again??

anyways on topic i completely agree with the pass and move bit. we are ****e when it comes to this. some of our players cant hit a pass five yards. as for one touch football forget about it.

torres and steve score so many goals because their first touch is fantastic and both 'gamble' that the return pass will come into the space that both can see as the best opportunity to create a goal scoring chance. after that the finishing class comes into it.

then we have the slow build up/ keep posession arguement. fair enough keep posession but keep it going forward all the time. watch united, watch how fast they attack, even villa attack with pace. turn the defenders, they hate it - in general cant compete for pace and results in an opportunity on goal or entice a foul.

our football at present is too slow at times. too defensive.

the ****e teams come to anfield to defend ??? thats not a shock is it ?? happens nearly every single week at anfield. how should we try to counteract this and break this down?? attack them in my opinion
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

Very good points. Pass and move happens very rarely and you are quite right more often than not when someone has the ball and is looking for someone in space/making space/making a run they find nobody. Instead they see red shirt after red shirt stood on the spot. The only players who seem to make space/make runs are Torres and Gerrard. As for taking people on one of the only ones to do so is, of all people, Dossena but unfortunately his defending leaves quite a lot to be desired. I still think Gerrard should be played on the right and Keane should have been given a whole season of playing with Torres to form an understanding and partnership. On top of that Riera should have been told wherever possible take the full back on. But that is not going to happen unfortunately IMO.

So onwards and upwards, lets get number 6 and do our very best to get 2nd. Number 19 will have to wait until next season!

my god ive been saying this for years, since houllier! if you watch the majority of our games, just watch what happens when one of players gets the ball.... the rest of the team just run away expecting the player with the ball to work wonders. One player who will always make himself available is Alonso but then he has a true footballers brain.

the scum are a good example of how pass and move works it pains me to say!

That is true but the pass to Alonso is usually a backward one as he sits deep and then when he looks for the runs there are none!

Its something I have often noticed and commented on with this particular Liverpool side, irritates the hell out of me, our off ball movement is diabolical, the amount of times we have a decent midfield break on but simply pass it square or back when im screaming at one of the more advanced players to move into space or make an intelligent run is just ridiculous. That simply has to be down to coaching and as such Rafa has to take the blame for that. The thing is it works in european football but in our league it often fails, its just not penetrating enough. I guess it would work if we had truly world class wingers or attacking midfielders, maybe thats why we get away with it so often when Torres and stevie play but realistically we need more than just them.
Im at the point where im thinking either Rafa changes his tactics for the prem or he overhauls the attacking options, because of that ill give him the benefit and see what happens in the summer transfer window.

I did hope that Sammy Lee would have been more of an influence on the prem formation and ethic, alas it seems not.

I don't think so mate, the "ditty" has been there a long time, he knows about it and is cool with it. It's a hangover from a previous (internet) life

Actually, when he did **** off, MrM changed it to "Big Mama's friend".

We lost pass and move football in 1999 and have yet to find it 10 years later. In the meantime, Arsenal and manure in those ten years have shown how prem league games MUST be played to win. Even Chelsea weren't all hoof ball during Mourinho (how the hell could they be with the likes of Robben and J Cole on fire?).
