An assault charge against England footballer Steven Gerrard has been dropped.

The Liverpool midfielder still faces a charge of affray in connection with an incident at a nightclub in Southport.

The 28-year-old had been in the Lounge Inn nightclub celebrating a 5-1 win over Newcastle when a disturbance broke out on 29 December.

A 34-year-old man had suffered facial injuries, North Sefton Magistrates' Court was told.

Good news though. Affray tends to be where a group of people are fighting and they don't know who has caused any injuries. A less serious offense than assault. He'll get a fine and a few hours community service max I think.

I've heard it mentioned before, but you really need to write some memoirs or something.

I was up for affray and 6 other charges and walked free

I think there has to be at least 3 or 4 people to answer an affray charge, so Stevie G could be in as the makeweight to try and charge the others

I read it on BBC news.

At least we don't need to worry about it before the end of the season now.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has denied any involvement in a fight in a Merseyside nightclub.

The 28-year-old England star pleaded not guilty to affray when he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court.

He is accused of being part of a group that injured businessman Marcus McGee, 34, at the Lounge Inn, Southport, in the early hours of 29 December 2008.

Mr Gerrard appeared in court on Friday alongside six other men who face the same charge.

They include Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Guildford Road, Southport, and midfielder Robert Grant, 18, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland.

Also in the dock were John McGrattan, 33, of Rimmer Avenue; Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive; John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road, and Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue, all Huyton.

                            Bail conditions

Asked how he pleaded, the father-of-two, said: "Not guilty." All six other men entered the same plea.

The Recorder of Liverpool, Henry Globe QC, adjourned the trial until 20 July.

All seven defendants were given bail with conditions not to contact witnesses nor to enter the Lounge Inn unless with a legal representative.

Mr Gerrard was arrested along with a number of other men outside the venue after the disturbance last year.

He had been out celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United.

Liverpool Football Club revealed during his court appearance that Mr Gerrard had agreed a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at Anfield until 2013.
