    Agger and Rafa

Rafael Benitez won't do for Daniel Agger
Danish centre-back has hinted he is unable to sign a new deal with Liverpool because of a problem with the manager

DANIEL AGGER has hinted he is unable to sign a new deal with Liverpool because of a problem with his manager, Rafael Benitez. The Danish centre-back is a free agent in less than 15 months and has been in on-off talks over staying on since the start of the season.

Benitez has continually trumpeted his desire to keep him, but Agger said: ‘The most important thing is the things he tells me when I look him in the eyes — his eyes, not what it says in the papers, it is what he says behind closed doors.’

Asked if Benitez was telling him good things in person, Agger replied: ‘I will tell you another time.’ The 24-year-old, who joined Liverpool in January 2006, is rumoured to be a target for AC Milan. Having missed almost the entire 2007-08 season through injuries, his appearances have been limited during this campaign, thanks in part to a series of minor knocks, but mainly because of Benitez’s preference for Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher as his pairing at centre-back. The veteran Sami Hyypia has also been ahead of Agger in the pecking order, although the Dane was in yesterday’s starting line-up against Blackburn, scoring Liverpool’s third goal. ‘I want to play,’ Agger said. Asked whether selection issues lay behind his reluctance to commit to a new deal, he said: ‘No. But I am at that stage where I need to play. ’

Agger confirmed his desire is to stay with Liverpool but admitted a number of top clubs would be his suitors if no agreement was reached at Anfield.

    .............................

It's a worry the situation with Agger, and he seems to be insinuating issues with rafa, that he won't come completely clean with.

I'd be worried what the issues are, and that he'd see them as unresolvable and do a owen on us, run down contract etc.

Or do people think the only issue is that, upto yesterday, he hadn't played, perhaps these quotes are from before the blackburn game?

Think we seen one of the things he offers yesterday; bringing ball forward with poise and confidence and ability to score cracking goals and pick out passes.

Long term, I think he's better than skrtel, but could see them as our duo when carra moves on.

It wont be the end of the world, but it will be a fairly large set back.

Players of his quality don't grow on trees and we need quality cover for when Skrtl or Carra are resting / injured.

And as Carra starts to age we'll need that more and more often.

Well yes but as a club we can't guarantee him a place if what's he's looking at!? He need to be good enough to deserve his place back in the team. He's been injured lately so he also needs to get that sorted so that he can have a platform to play more.

At this moment in time Agger is mouthing off too much in the press for my liking. Like it or not Rafa is the manager and he's got to accept that he's got to abide with that if he wants to stay here. No player is bigger than this football club and frankly I wouldn't be losing sleep if he goes. We'll replace him.

And we've been doing really well without him in the side. He's played yesterday yes but against a largely **** Blackburn side who gave him plenty of space. Still he wasn't outstanding yesterday as he was a bit sloppy in his defending once or twice and wasn't as precise with his distribution of the ball as he can normally be. Of course he's an excellent player one who I would like to see more in the team, but he's not deserved more than that this season.

Great players are the ones who shut their mouth and knuckle down in training and prove their worth on the pitch. That's what Xabi did this season after an under par season last year.

I really rate Agger and want him to stay. If he has to go then we need to make sure we get a good price for him and more imporantly, we sign a quality replacement who is as good on the ball.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

The article is over 5 months old. My money says he's still here in August with a new contract. I'll be absolutely gutted if he's not. By far & away the best defender at the club.

Selling Agger would be nothing short of disastrous. He's the only defender we've got with the potential of being one of the best in the world.

I think thats the point - the date given for the article (on the article itself) is in the future. It sounds a lot like the comments we heard a few months ago so I'm going to assume that there is nothing new here and wait and see what happens.

All very strange, calculated even, the releasing of little snippets at certain times.

I think he will stay. No way Rafa will want to lose a player of his undoubted quality and potential.

If he wants to leave then so be it - it definately won't affect us at all. His injury record has been shocking since he signed for us. Only Kewell and Degen have had a worse record than him when it comes to injuries. How can you be reliant on a defender who's only fit for at most 15-20 games a season? We play around 60 games a season
