Why would people watch the second tier of the PL more than the Championship? The top division is where the interest is. You can rebadge the second leage like calling it the Championship, or PL2 or whatever, it will still be largely ignored.
Would the two divisons not be of equal billing and the top two or three would then playoff to become the league winners, similar to the Amercian style?

That's exactly what I was thinking.
        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

          Spot on.

It'd be a renaming exercise at most, the status of both the top flight and the 'second Premier League' would be no different to how the current PL and Championship are.

No, I think the league would work as normal, the top division would be the most important.

I don't get the playoff system the have in America and Rugby, its purely so TV companies have one game they can build up and promote, we need that about as much as we need TV stoppages...

Why do people insist on coming up with ridiculous American-style ideas to "improve" football FFS? We'll be gettting stoopid animal-style team names next.

That would be part of it, but I think one of the main reasons for doing it is to expand the collective tv bargining from the current 20 team deal to a 36 two division deal so getting relegated isn't as painful. That isn't an issue for us, but the chance to play 4 less league games (a winter break?) and the increased competition Celtic and Rangers would provide in the long term (assuming they were promoted from Prem 2) would be benifical.

Dunno about you, but as a Liverpool supporter, i love footie and the more, the better. Dont want a winter break, going to the footie around Christmas and New Year is the best time of the season.

As for 'increased competition' from Rangers & Celtic

                  They're both utter turd.

In the days when Rangers could attract the likes of Brian Laudrup and Gazza, there might've been increased competition but nowadays both clubs are bobbins.

I've no interest in playing Celtic or Rangers. None whatsoever.

You're right, Celtic and Rangers are both ****e at the moment, but if this went ahead I would expect them both to be promoted and pushing the top 6 within 10 years..maybe less.

Don't you think replacing a game against West Brom, Middlesbrough or Portsmouth with a game against Celtic or Rangers would be a good thing?

What is it with Bolton, they have given us the 3 biggest football dickheads going in Allardyce, Phil Brown and now Gartside.

Awful idea, just keep things as they are. Why are the British FA and/or Premier League always coming up with some stupid money grabbing plans Don't see it in Spain for instance.

Anyways, I can't see it either because I think the trend will be more or less towards clubs negotiating individual TV rights in the future with games broadcast over the net in an increasing capacity so the bottom clubs will still lose out in the end.
                                * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.
