As i said already, Kuyt's having his best ever season and unless that return becomes annual, i dont think it's to be relied upon.

Of course there's no way to know - it is the future after all - but perhaps he has found his true level.

2006-7: first season, finding best position, adapting to teammates, tactics and the league
2007-8: form dipped, likely affected by father's death
      2008-9: best season so far.

I'm not saying he's going to keep improving but the levels he reached in his first two seasons are at least understandable.
      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

i dont see any reason why it would drop, he seems to have found his position within the team now, seems truly settled and think he can definitely achieve this years total year in, year out.

Once upon a time he was a goal machine

I likewise dont see any (objective) reason to assume it'll stay the same. It might do, but could easily not.

A peak, by definition, is impossible to maintain.

Whether you think it will or not, it's still not to be relied upon. It's not the same as knowing that Stevie, fitness permitting, WILL score 20 goals a season.

            why a peak ?

he scored 12 in 36 first season
he scored 3 in 32 second season
he scored 12 in 34 third season

those are league stats and over all its

            15 and 48
            11 and 48
            14 and 48

isnt it more natural to assume that the death of his father had a huge effect as he mentioned and that next year he will carry on? in 2 out of 3 seasons he has scored goals....and one he hasnt, isnt it more natural to presume that he is more likely to do the thing he has done in 2 seasons than the one he didnt ( where he had a genuine excuse)

I was talking about 15 goals this season - which is his highest ever, and therefore the peak of his goalscoring achievements for the club.

fair enough but then i think its reasonable to presume he will get into double figures next year?

and if we got that from the left to i would be very happy

It's probable that he'd get into double figures in all comps. I dont think that, as our third highest goalscoring contributor, would be enough though.

dont disagree there, definitely need another 20 goals a season man for sure

I think I would like to modify/clarify my point. I still think that on the terms originally defined by Craig that we do have enough players who score goals now. There are however two differences in the sets of 4 provided.
1/ All of Uniteds four can reasonable lead the line and act as a pivot for the other attackers
2/ Almost as an extension of the above United can rest players and use the same system with less change in effectiveness. Our set work best in particular combinations which always require Torres up top and almost certainly Gerrard behind.

I Think the problem we have is that it is all about Gerrard and Torres. We need someone who can work together with these two or deputise for them when injured

Scum dont have a partnership they just have 4 very talented forward who can all work together.

I guess the partnership versus group thing is a central facet to this. Although I think that that Kuyt, Benayoun + Gerrard and Torres can work together well as a quartet and you can envision a number of trios that work the problem is that the same could not be said of say Kuyt and Benayoun, or even Gerrad + anyone but Torres, as we would lack a pivot in attack. All of Uniteds players can play that pivot and a second role giving them greater flexibility and more potential for resting players and getting more out of other players like Park, Giggs etc.

I believe that Kuyt could provide a pivot but it would need us to get players on both flanks that really cut in with pace. As things are he has effectively become a specialist rightsided forward who can fill in as a physical second striker when needed.
