Is Insua a homegrown player from 10/11?

Does anyone know for certain if Insua becomes a home grown player within UEFA rules from the beginning of the 10/11 season?

I understand the rules to be that a player has to spend 3 years at a club under the age of 21 to qualify, is that correct?

Insua joined us in August 2007 so August 2010 will be 3 years, he was born in January 1989 so he's be 21 and 8 months in August 2010...

I've just checked on wikipedia, it says he arrived on loan in November 2006 and his deal became permanant from Auguest 2007, I wonder if that impacts on the rules?

i think the deal to bring him to lpool was agreed in november, but he arrived in the next transfer window, so in jan 2007. well the rules say a player has to be at the club he is registerd for, at least three years(36 months) between 15 and 21 years of age, to be considered home-grown, so imo it should have no impact

It unfortunately does impact it I'm afraid. He's only going to be classed as 'homegrown' 3 years from the point he was permanently signed. Sorry guys

UEFA defines locally-trained or ‘homegrown' players as those who, regardless of their nationality, have been trained by their club or by another club in the same national association for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21. The UEFA rule contains no nationality conditions whatsoever because within the EU such conditions are illegal (following the Bosman ruling).
i don't think that's the case saj, anyhow if not next season it's the one after that, and imo we have the left-back position covered for the next decade

it might also explain rafa's reluctance allowing players we've brought from abroad at 17 or 18 to go out on loan

Interesting point that. Hopefully in the next few years we can develop a number of squad players so that at least we can do whatever we feel is best for individual young players.

Agreed, that would make total sense, and it would also explain how more english lads are allowed out on loan.

We need 8 home grown players (Minimum of 4 by us and 4 by someone else) for the champions league and it looks like the prem might adopt those rules to, who will our 8 be in 2-3 years time? I think:-

                    1. Gerrard
                    2. Insua
                    3. Spearing
                    4. Darby
                    5. Mike Roque??
                    6.
                    7.
                    8.

I've left Carragher off as I think he only has 3 years left, but thats for a different thread...

That is indeed an interesting point, sounds very feasible. Would loaning players out to other English sides not count though? - "....or by another club in the same national association"

i think it would count, but you still need at least 4 home-grown players, and its probably better if you have at least 6, or maybe seven, so if you sell one or two you still have the minimun required 4

we can still buy association trained, but need to have at least 4 home-grown, that's the main worry imo

So the answer to the original question is 'Yes'.

We have bunged the likes of Kelly into the squad this season and it hasn't done any harm in terms of our depth - I think we will continue with that policy of players who make up numbers/might gain experience in at least a couple of slots for at least a year or two.
