To be fair, Pennant was at his dream club and was no longer wanted. He was also in the position of being nowhere near the England squad, and one where there was no international tournament he could have played in anyway.

Now Pennant is going to sign for a club and command a massive signing on fee or massive wages, he's laughing his way to the bank. And with no transfer fee involved he can join any club he wants, not just a select few who could match his wages and the transfer fee.

If he plays it just right, he'll land himself a massive amount of cash and first team football, giving him one season to put himself up for England squad selection.

My advice to him would be give up on England personally. He's a lot better than what he showed at Anfield, and will prove to be an astute purchase for a mid ranking team. But he's not, nor ever will be, good enough for England. If the reports are true about Atletico, I'd be off in a shot.

I won't paint him as some heinous villain for it, no, but that first paragraph are all the reasons it was the right time for him to move on and the second paragraph are things a more ambitious player would not allow to outweight them. So if Rafa wants Babel no more than he did Pennant and there are decent offers, he should go.

From the vague newspaper reports I read it boiled down to signing for Stoke City, or being told to sit it out by Real Madrid and AC Milan.

And I tell you, had Michael Owen followed Pennants route when at Real, he'd be a Liverpool player at this moment in time. So which player showed a real lack of ambition?

There's a huge difference between Owen's situation and Pennant's. Owen had an offer from Liverpool, he chose to ensure his England ambitions could be met by not rocking the boat with Real and signing for Newcastle - that's a case of having different ambitions rather than less, even if any cunt on here can tell you those ambitions were misplaced.

I know Pennant may not have had suitable offers, but then it wasn't me that brought him up as a comparison. Just suggesting a few differences between the players which might lead to different outcomes.
