    Captaincy

Should Iraloa appoint a new captain?

Virgil is the best CB of his generation, will still probably be an automatic starter, but he has one year left on his contract, and his influence as captain has also been questioned last season. Would deconstructing the current pecking order be positive or negative for the dressing room?

We have Dom, who we are probably looking to start contract negotiations with , and who is probably speaking to all of the other top clubs, making him captain might be a sweetener that gets him to commit longer term, and he certainly would lead by example in terms of effort.

    Any other candidates?

    What do you think?

Virg captain & Dom VC IMO.

      It is a good question.

I do think it is a transition season for this, and surely we wont have Vigil on the pitch for every single minute of every single match again? So we need a VC who would be earmarked to be the next captain. Dom looks a good choice, though he does have a bit of occasional arrogance about him (such as reacting to the fans - forget which game) which might need a bit of work. Outside of him there are genuinely no obvious candidates. Macca would have been one... but not so much after last season.

I guess next season could be a hand over year of sorts. Or maybe someone else will emerge in that time.

I think it’s a quality we need to look at in new signings. We’ve gone from having plenty of leaders and standard setters but no one really stands out right now. I know Jacquet is seen as a future leader and has those qualities but it’s way too early for him.

Dom is the most likely leader right now but let’s see what happens with Iraola and what he can unlock in some of the players or who the club brings in.

I wouldn't rock the boat with captaincy changes now, coming in as a new leader and then rubbing the leader on the pitch up the wrong way could cause issues. I'd be encouraging Virg to think succession and get him involved in that choice of the next captain. I get the shouts for Dom, but he feels a bit tone deaf and immature at times to me, I think he has a good bit of growing up to do. Also, he can be a bit performative (IMO) - I wouldn't want a Bruno Fernandes type as captain of Liverpool - I know that's a bit extreme, but he does have some rough edges. Also, a lot of the scouse Da's aren't keen on his clobber, they just want a lad who wears Montirex caps and North Face trackies.

Yeah, I think the coming season will see a hand over of the arm band, not straight away, but at some stage, should we not retain VVD for another year. I feel Dom will be vice captain with the view of taking over the reigns for 27/28. to go with his shinny new contract.

VVD will be captain, VC is less clear, Alisson and Gomez could be contenders, they don't necessarily play a huge amount in Gomez' case but neither did Robbo or Milner previous seasons as VC, I guess Szoboszlai or one of the other midfielders are probably the other main candidates from the squad as it currently stands

Interesting as I don’t see Ali or Gomez being here in 12 months time so my love of succession planning says it should be Dom as VC with him stepping up to Captain next season when Virg leaves.

Isn't Dom the captain of the Hungary team? He seems like a good fit and certainly leads by example from an effort and productivity perspective.

100%. I hope we don’t need to play Virg for every minute of every game like last season so we get to see Dom lead the side.

I think the typical LFC think to do would be to give it to someone like Gomez because of his experience and longevity at the club, even if he isn't playing regularly, in practical terms it may end up being Szoboszlai. Personally I wouldn't go with Alisson as I don't really like GK (or strikers) as captain.

But new manager new ideas who knows what he will think.

It's a really good question and perfect to give Dom the VC and then primed for him to step in the following season imo.

I guess it’s possible that we buy someone in the summer that may have the attributes for captaincy, but that would obviously take a year to prove at least.

I'd like to see Dom with VC armband but only if he signs a new contract.
