anyone know anything about our new reseve team coach?

other than his brother is steve and he shares the same name as the guy who played gonch in grange hill

seems on the face of it a strange appointment thats all, he is 60 years old been round the lower leagues for the last few years and i would have expected a higher profile appointment for the reserve team job.

I think getting an older man is a good idea. I think at reserve/youth level we need people who can help players develop as people as well as players and people with long experience at first team level are more likely to be able to do that. Maybe Rafa feels that is something that we have missed since Herrera went.

I also wonder whether McParland is interested in creating links with lower league teams in order to get players better loan experience.

All I know about McMahon is learned from wiki:

      John McMahon (footballer)
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John McMahon (born 7 December 1949 in Manchester) is an English former footballer turned coach. His brother Steve is a former England and Liverpool player.

      Career

A full-back who joined Preston North End in 1965 as a fifteen year old, McMahon made his first team debut on 6 October 1970 in a League Cup tie against West Bromwich Albion.

He had a loan spell at Southend United in 1970–71, playing 4 games, before establishing himself as a first team regular in 1971–72 when he was named as the club's player of the year.

McMahon scored 6 goals for Preston between 1970 and 1979. He played one game on loan at Chesterfield before moving to Crewe Alexandra in 1979.

McMahon spent eight years on the coaching staff of Tranmere Rovers, where he had two spells as caretaker manager, in the 2003–04 season and at the end of the 2005–06 season.

He moved to become first-team coach at Shrewsbury Town in June 2006,[1] and was made assistant manager in September 2007.[2] On 3 March 2008 he was appointed caretaker manager, after the departure of manager Gary Peters.[3] The appointment of Paul Simpson on 12 March saw him resume the assistant role.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Actually, for the ladies reading, may I add that a man between the ages of 25-30 would be more beneficial. A good balance of experience and stamina
            Forwards.......

Who would you class as high profile??

              An ex player again??

I would hope that we can start to bring in and recognise some decent English talent but the Reserve squad is only as good as our scouting system.

certainly not an ex player again, i suppose i dont have a list of names to hand just seemed strange appointment, listening to wise heads on here.....it could be a good appointment. and i agree with the idea of bringing some young lads through from the lower leagues he may well have a good knowledge of some of the lesser known youngsters

My choice would have been Steve Cotterill as he is available, knows the lower leagues and apparently is a very good coach.

Cotterill is thick as **** and would've be a terrible choice, terrible.

Cotterill did okay with Burnley for a while.

McMahon is a strange appointment but hopefully with his experience he'll be able to recognise any genuine potential amongst the mass of resources we have at that level.

Liverpool have announced the appointment of Antonio Gomez Perez to their backroom staff as reserve team coach.
Gomez will work alongside the newly appointed reserve team manager John McMahon.

Not to be confused with the Antonio Gomez who was previously part of the coaching staff before moving to Sunderland, Gomez is a former Real Madrid player.

Born on August 1, 1973, in Madrid, Gomez spent 10 years with Real where he played for their youth team under the command of Rafa Benitez.

After making his senior debut in 1994, he subsequently played for Sevilla and later Albacete Balompie and Toledo before injury finished his career in 2004.

Gomez began working as a Coach in Toledo's Youth system in 2003, before moving to Albacete Balompie as Youth Coach in 2004.

His team won the Spanish National Youth Cup the 'Copa Del Rey' against Valencia in 2007. After this he moved to work as Reserve Team Coach, where he remained until the end of the 2008-09 season.
