I'm delighted to see this thread up here.
In the understandable rush to deify Gerrard, Alonso, Smicer and Dudek (and rightly so to an extent of course), the way in which Hamann's contribution was overlooked was actually criminal. He was the platform, the cornerstone, the lynchpin and key to everything that happened that night, and the glue that made it all stick. I'm no tactical genius but I knew in pre-match it was a massive error by Rafa not to start him but thankfully it came good in the end.
He didn't score the goals, he didn't play defence splitting passes but he was the bulwark against a Kaka and Co. that had been knifing through us for fun before the break, and he proved the rock on which they all floundered. Repeatedly. Irresistible Force met Immovable Object, and Immovable Object stared them down and put them in his pocket.
Some say he didn't even blink, but I don't believe it myself.
Didi will forever be in my top 5 Liverpool players of all time, that's how high I rate him.
