RBS branches attacked by angry Liverpool fans

RBS branches attacked by angry Liverpool fans in protest at Gillett and Hicks loan
Angry Liverpool fans attacked three RBS branches in the early hours of this morning in protest against refinancing of a loan taken out by the club's American owners.

The doors of the city's flagship Royal Bank of Scotland branch on Dale Street were padlocked resulting in chaos as bank employees arrived for work.

Supporters who are becoming increasingly concerned for Liverpool FC's future, are now turning their attention towards the bank which controls loans for the club's American owners.

Branches in Hunts Cross and Crobsy were targeted simultaneously in the early hours.

Posters reading 'No to refinancing' were plastered across the buildings and have been attributed to a renegade group of supporters.

A group of MPs joined the protest last week lobbying the Government, who have become majority Shareholders in RBS, to step in.

Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to 'ensure the Royal Bank of Scotland does not renew their credit facility at the end of its current term.'

US businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks have endured a backlash of ill feeling since taking control of Anfield in February 2007.

Despite assuring fans that they wouldn't burden the club with any debt - they secured a £350m loan against the club, which is due for refinancing at the end of July.

LFC fans unhappy about the debt and failure to begin work on a promised new stadium have called on RBS to cut their ties, effectively forcing the American duo to sell up.

The Spirit of Shankly fans' group, who have been most outspoken towards the owners, denied any knowledge of the attacks and called for a more 'diplomatic approach.'

Representative James McKenna said: "Whilst we are vocal against the refinancing of the club's loan - we are encouraging our members to take a more diplomatic and sensible approach."

The Royal Bank of Scotland were unavailable for comment.

Well they are true fans so I'm sure whatever way they decide to represent us will be for the best.

This one little protest will do more for the cause than SOS have managed since we were bought by the yanks.

How? It's not going to achieve anything. It was an utterly retarded thing to do.

C`mon, all they did was put a couple of chains on doors and put up a few posters, imo this will make RBS think "more" about their buisness relationship with the owners, and it will also give the owners a bit more to think about, even might help to throw a few more quid in the kitty!
Dont go ott on this lads.

I'm starting to warm to the idea of long-term ownership by G+H, okay feeling less cold about the prospect. If they start getting their act together and focus on the stadium and bringing in better players then I think most fans would be happy for things to remain as they are. They haven't delivered on their promises, but they can still win us round. I feel uneasy about 'attacking' RBS. This act will bring some publicity to the issue, but there are idiots out there and I wouldn't be surprised if they take it upon themselves to go a step further.

I understand your stance mate but what happens (and I think this is massively unlikely) that RBS do get hacked off with everything that comes with loaning money to G&H. Like it or not the debt is against the club and if repayment is forced and not forthcoming then we go in to administration which will be 10 times worse than the situation we are currently in.

Unfortunately everybody gets tarred with the same brush, so the actions of these ****ing idiots makes us all look like cunts.

I hope they find who did this and kick the **** out of them.

What next? Burning the american embassy, getting a mob together and go rape, torch & pilage the whole of ****ing Scotland due to the name of the bank?

Then you wonder why other fans trash memorials and the like.

Not sure if G&H have any credibility left to start to warm to them. They have blatantly lied from day one, created a lot of bad feeling and embarrassment to our club and supporters, not to mention gone behind RAFA's back. The key thing is that RAFA obviously has found some harmony with Hicks and signed a long term contract. RAFA won the power-struggle, G&H now have to help him win some trophies.
