Gareth Barry anyone?

On a more realistic and serious note, what about Busquets from Barca? He wouldn't come cheap, but if they do get Mascher his chances would surely be limited and he could form part of the deal if we sell Mascher.

Himself and Fallini caused a lot of hassle. I'm surprised he ahsn't been snapped up by somebody yet.

Is there not a good reason why United and Arsenal – after years of monitoring him – appear to have lost all interest, leaving just Bolton after him? I haven’t seen that much of him but he’s never stood out when I have. I reckon he’s another Tonton Zola Moukoko.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Don't you remember his hatrick in the CL final at 17 years old in his debut in the competition or when he got 48 goals in a single season playing behind the strikers.

If Tonton is available I think he would be a great addition although we may have to drop Gerrard to the bench to accomodate or perhaps move him back to RB.

Interesting shouts there, what about Inler from Udinese? Werent ourselves and Arsenal linked with him before?
So assuming the worst happens and Mascher and Xabi both leave and we get, for arguments sake 50 million for them both, and with the money from Arbeloa and some leftover coins have 60 million to replace them - realistic IMO.

Some of the foreign midfielders may be good, but are used to their own leagues where the pace is different. If Xabi and Masch do go, then we have to look to Lucas and Spearing and possible options, Plessis a remote possibility and even Agger is a great passer of the ball.

hamsik is more a forward than midfielder, he can fill in at both flanks, but he plays just behind the striker most of the time.

i'd agree with harv, that defour would be a very good buy.

I don't think it's so much of an issue, when you are good you are good, in Italy or England, with Xabi you could see right away that there was a good player, he didn't take long to settle, neither did Torres or Arbeloa.

Who can do their jobs? I struggle to think of many players who could slot in to our system, names that have been touted around or I can think of are:

Martinez of Bilbao
D'Agustino of Udinese
De Rossi of Roma
Senna of Villareal (short term)
Toure of Barcelona (unlikely)
Some random South American dude I know nothing about
Some random Spanish dude I know nothing about.

But let's say we can buy two replacements for 30 million and then get in Silva type of player to go with and a back up for Torres - would it be worth it? I really don't want Xabi and Mascher stay if their head isnt in it anymore so what to do?
If we only get £50m for both xabi and mascherano then we can safely assume that Rick Parry is still working at the club.

I do, we paid £30m for the two of them. Both have improved significantly while they've been with us, and given the way the transfer market has gone, the Alonso and Mascherano of ability of the time we bought them would cost £50m now, never mind the improved Alonso and Mascherano
