    Andriy Voronin

    http://fourfourtwo.com/news/england/33820/default.aspx

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has warned forgotten striker Andriy Voronin that he will struggle for first-team opportunities next season.

The Ukrainian international, who has been capped 57 times, has made just 19 league appearances for the Reds since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2007.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, where he netted 11 times in 20 league outings.

But, rather than join the German outfit on a permanent basis, Voronin has insisted he wants to stay on Merseyside in 2009/10 and fight for his place as the Reds attempt to win their maiden Premier League crown.

And although Benitez has praised the front-man's efforts last term, he warned him that he may have to be content with a place on the substitutes' bench for large parts of the campaign.

“He did really well in Germany last season, scoring plenty of goals, and he has told me that he wants to stay at the club and fight for his position,” Benitez told Sky Sports.

“I have told him that will be difficult with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard as our first-choice strikers,
but he realises this and the players we have in the squad.

“But he also knows that this club always plays more than 60 games a season and that means there are opportunities.

“He will fight for his place.”

    He added:

“At this moment, he is a Liverpool player, but it depends on him.”

“He is continuing to work hard and is playing well, so he will have a chance. It is good to have him back.”

I can't work that out. Does Rafa wan't him, or is he just going to hanging around like a bad smell??

Maybe this is rafa putting Voro's new found attitude to the test by saying he will struggle just to see how he gets o in preseason.

Doesn't look as if Gerrard will be dropping into the middle anytime soon either.

I'd hardly have him down as first choice striker but I can see where he is coming from.

I don't think we saw enough of Voronin to wholly judge him, to be fair.

Rafa was hoping to have sold him for a nice profit by now but nobody will meet the asking price

I think it's obvious that Rafa doesnt want him and he's basically telling Voronin, if you stay, you aint gonna play.

I think that's it exactly. He's just testing him.
I really dont think Voronin's as bad as people make out tbh.

I would rather see N'gog play ahead of voronin and looks like rafa feels the same way.

In which case he can sell him then, yes?

Well yeah, but we need someone to actually offer money before we can do that.

He's not that bad as such, but he just doesnt really have any particularly impact-making assets in his game.

11 goals in 20 appearances in the Bundesliga, must generate some interest.

Hertha were gonna sign him but they didnt make the CL did they?

Rafa doesnt want him, but still recognises that the lad has a value of about £3m or so, and if people dont want to pay the value, he wont sell. Fair enough really. I'm the same on Football Manager

I hope we get better as back up striker, the thought of vronomin playing a run of games fills me with fear!

Voronin is not as bad as he is made out to be really, and I think he is a decent backup striker.

But I would really like to see Nemeth given the chance in the first team, also ahead of Ngog, think he is proving he is worthy of a chance.

hmm i think N'gog is streets ahead of Nemeth and if we aren't going to bring in another striker then it will be between N'gog and Voronin to fight it out as first choice back up

Ideally for me I'd like someone to come in and bridge the gap between Torres and N'gog - someone with similar qualities to voronin(experience but cheap) but er better haha
