Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill says Liverpool did not lodge a bid for Gareth Barry before the midfielder's move to Manchester City.
Well, that now makes Rafa's comments seem odd. I had been of the opinion that we must have made a bid which Barry turned down in favour of the money of Citeh, turns out I was wrong. Barry my well have moved to the only club who bid for him...Last edited by FatTony; 20-07-09, 08:54 AM.

That's what I have been saying all along. Barry only had 2 choices: stay at villa or go to city.Originally posted by FatTony View PostAston Villa boss Martin O'Neill says Liverpool did not lodge a bid for Gareth Barry before the midfielder's move to Manchester City.

As a club, it's very hypocritical to slag barry off about money issues. WE wanted him for less than his asking price last year so financially, weren't WE being greedy?

I don't agree with that, there are other reasons:Originally posted by Craig_H View PostIt's hardly rocket science. City cant offer CL football, nor even europe at all, not even InterToto. They're not title challengers and they arent a european giant. So that narrows down the reasons for him joining them, to financial.
I didnt need to hire Sherlock Holmes for that one. As you point out yourself, it was cash. Or 'money money money' as Rafa put it.
So you basically agree with me and are putting forward the same argument.
1) city are a decent club, financially secure (unlike us), and are probably going places
2) they have a great new stadium
3) Barry had burnt his bridges at Villa following his high profile move to us which went pear shaped last year
4) man city is a good challenge. villa, do nothing year after year but with his new club there is a very good chance of being part of a team to qualify for champions league football
5) we never had an offer accepted by villa
It sounds so bitter, complaining about not getting Barry and saying that the only reason is because of money. Very arrogant and embarrassing - as LFC fans we should be above that.

You can dress it up all you want, it was either money led, or he didnt think he was good enough to hold a place down, thus jeopardising world cup place next year.Originally posted by carheex View PostI don't agree with that, there are other reasons:

no he didnt, they would happily have kept him

i wouldnt say they have a very good chance, in fact i would say they have a slim chance of getting it in the next 2/3 seasons.

LOL - you missed out commenting on THE single most important point that I made...the one that makes all other irrelevant.....we never had an offer accepted for him!!Originally posted by red g View PostYou can dress it up all you want, it was either money led, or he didnt think he was good enough to hold a place down, thus jeopardising world cup place next year.

although if he did want CL football so much he could have waited around as he knew us and maybe even arsenal may have come in for him._____________________________________

The "i want to play CL football" was more than likely just an excuse at that time as Villa couldn't offer it. I'm amazed at how many people are using that against him. Players will say anything around transfer time if their agent thinks it appropriate.
There's no guarantee that we would have still wanted Barry in 12 months time and who's to say arsenal will be able to offer him CL football in 12 months time......

Of course he could, i just can't see how anyone in their right mind thinks Barry's move to City was about anything other than money, he could so easily have waited a week or two to see what transpired, like a chance to be in the Champions league THIS season.Originally posted by red g View Postsmall details

Truth is City offered him loads of cash that wiped his mind clear of any thoughts he had of joining any other club.

1) H&G have sold off some of their US assets, meaning that our financial security is pretty solid now.Originally posted by carheex View PostI don't agree with that, there are other reasons:

2) A great new stadium that the council owns.
3) The fans seemed to have forgiven him and most wanted him to stay - which wouldnt have been the case if he'd burned his bridges.
4) Which is all fine, had he not promised to only leave for CL football. Makes him look foolish.
5) What's that got to do with the idea that he's gone to City for a bumper pay packet?
I'm not complaining about not getting Barry, i'm calling him out for what he is - a money hungry mercenary who made out that he 'had to' play CL football and that was the only reason he'd leave Villa. And then he came out and slated Rafa for saying what 99% of people also think - that he went to City because they're offering him miles more than anyone else would.
I've got no problem with him going to City, i've not even got a problem with him going for the money - i'm just telling it like it is, and my criticism is based on the ****e he spoke about only going because he wanted to play CL football.

Spot on, that. Especially the bit in bold.

The problem was that you didn't actually know that. You had a go at Rafa for making the comments with no evidence to backup your claim, but had a go at others for having a pop at Barry for being greedy with no evidence...Originally posted by carheex View PostThat's what I have been saying all along. The fact that your thoughts have been shown to be correct is irrelivent (you didn't know that was the case, it was just a guess, like the rest of us). It was the hypocrisy of your argument that I found annoying.

Barrys move was not just about money. Man City have an ambitious plan and I'm sure he bought into that. It is very clear that they will be a major force sooner rather than later, just like Chelsea are.
I'm sure that had Hull offered him more wage he would have chose Man City over them.Forwards.......

I don't agree. Had it been Hull with more money and similar plans he would have chosen them. He states he would only leave Villa for the CL and then goes to City who are going to have to fight hard to even be in it the following year by which point he will be 30.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostBarrys move was not just about money. If he isn't a mercenary then I don't know what is.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.
