Prior to last season Xabi had under performed in Rafa's eyes and he saw Gareth Barry as a better alternative. He therefore made attempts to sign Barry and put Alonso on the transfer list.

He set a price of £16m which was not met and Alonso stayed. For the whole of last season Alonso was not given the cold shoulder and was played whenever he was fit, in fact he played ahead of Mascherano who was showing poor form early on.

Rafa clearly showed he will not hold grudges with his actions and Alonso managed to have his best season at the club since joining, after he was given the platform to perform.

Since being at Anfield Alonso has become a first choice international for Spain, has won the Champions League and now has arguably the biggest club in the world chasing after his services. I would say that Rafa has been pretty good for Alonso.

But don't let the truth get in the way of a good media story, eh?

I don't see the two situations as analogous.
        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Xabi needs to grow a pair and get over it. How can he not understand that if you under-perform you may be sold?

Didn`t it also have to do with Xabi`s involvment in Pako leaving?
Rafa felt Xabi had been disloyal, maybe Xabi feels he isn`t trusted anymore.

I tend to agree with Craig and think we maybe should have cut our losses and kept him for one more year. After all if he contributed towards just one trophy next year, the money would easily be recuperated.

I’m just hoping that Rafa is letting him and Dossena go relatively cheaply as he needs to get cash together quickly for our next big signing.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I'd have player Arbeloa LB next season and RB on the occasion where GJ didnt play. So to my mind, he'd have played plenty of games.

If you have a different opinion that says Insua should be 1st choice LB, then fair enough. But there's no winning or losing as such.
It's the quantity of your opinions rather than the quality. You win hands down for giving us all the benefit of your opinions on just about anything a zillion times a day. Can I say a heartfelt thanks on behalf of all posters on the forum. I never know what to think about any LFC matters until I absorb your take on them

Arbs isn't so special we need to cling desperately to him like some dumped fiddle at the school disco. Getting a reputation for holding players against their will isn't going to help with signing the world class players we need in the future. We have Johnson, Darby and Deggen (in that order) to cover, so not worth it, plus we'd lose the cash.

Xabi is different, he has 3 years left and could still be sold in 11 months for the same/similar fee (If he didn't change his mind). Also no matter how upset he got, if his performances dropped he'd damage his world cup plans, so I dont think commitment would be a problem (until the end of the season when he may shirk a few 50/50's, to avoid injury).

Nothings changed since last off season and he had a cracker last year. I think he'd still perform is forced to stay.

I would have liked to have kept him for one more year, but once he handed in a transfer request theres no going back. Who knows maybe we were trying to strike a deal like that to keep him for a year and that was what forced him to hand in a transfer request.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

                          Everything's changed - he's asked to leave.
