I really didn't want to post in this thread! - gutted, more about the fact that he was a 'liverpool' player through and through and the type of person you want associated with the club than just his ability (which we will miss)
My favourite alonso moment that i have mentioned before - was his first home game at anfield, iirc it might have been someone like norwich? - anyway the ball came to his feet in the centre of the park and he took one touch, turned and sprayed it 50 yards to someones feet out wide in one fluid movement and he seemed to not even look where he was passing it too.........the whole ground just gasped.
Gutted we couldn't keep - the feeling is strange, it's like having a fit girlfriend for 4-5 years that you love and then all of a sudden she doesn't want you anymore and wants to go to some rich flashy ****. it's a horrible rejection that i feel - that for whatever reasons, no matter how much love we showed xabi it wasn't enough. I hate to say it but **** him, i hope he flops there, struggles to settle and regrets leaving.i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

It's turned into the Simon Bates Show..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Well said. Alonso was good, very good on his day but lacked consistency and you're all over rating him. We won't struggle to replace him and will have forgotten him this time next year. The same cannot be said for SG and FT. THEY are key to this season.Originally posted by ronniedrew View Postcorrect, the 2 players we have that would walk into ANY team in the world are still with us , thank god

We're having one world class player less in the team and that is a fact. Aquilani isn't in the same league yet, he's still got to prove everything.Originally posted by carheex View PostWell said. World class? I think not. Everyone seems to think that he performed at last seasons level for his 5 years with us - he didn't. The season before he did ok but the 2 seasons before that he was dreadful. Very patchy form on the whole if the truth be known. And it's no coincidence that his best form for us happened during the year that he had his sights set on madrid!Originally posted by fredo View PostWe're having one world class player less in the team and that is a fact. I haven't seen Aquilani play, not even for a single second. His stats tell me that he isn't right for us.Last edited by carheex; 05-08-09, 10:31 AM.

he's a spaniard and a gent. he didnt fook us over and gave us great service but wants to go home in what is a great move for him. how should we expect him to pass it up.
he's going home to win a championship medal in spain and have a crack at the CL again. its an obvious move for a spaniard and clearly he's reconciled the basque origins stuff.
best of luck xabi (unless its against us) and thanks for what you gave us.

It is indeed a sad day.
One of my favourite recipes will now have to be retired.
Never again will my wife utter the phrase: Shall we have Xabi for dinner tonight?
Xabi Alonso Chicken (Aka Delia's Chicken Basque )
For "4".
1 1.75kg chicken, jointed into 8 pieces.
2 lg red peppers
2 onions
2 oz (50 g) sun-dried tomatoes in oil
2-3 tbs olive oil
2 lg cloves garlic
50z (150g) chorizo sausage, skinned & cut into slices
Brown rice ,measured to 8 fl oz (225ml) level in measuring-jug
10 fl oz(275ml) chicken stock
6 fl oz (170ml) dry white wine
1 lev tblspoon tom puree
1/2 tsp paprika
1 tsp chopped fresh herbs
2 oz (50g) pitted black olives,halved
1/2 lg orange, peeled and cut into wedges
salt&ground bl pepper
Stir fry peppers and onions. Add chicken pieces and brown to a golden colour. Add chopped sun-dried toms, garlic, chorizo sausage and toss around in the oil.
Next stir in rice and, and when grains have taken on a good coating of oil, add stock, wine, tomato puree and paprika.
When simmering point reached, sprinkle on herbs and scatter the olives and wedges of orange on the surface.
Cover with a tight fitting lid and cook in the oven for an hour...gas 4, 350* F (180*C)... or on hob over gentle heat for about 50mins-1 hr, til rice cooked

You're right that he wasn't consistent for the best part of 2 years but he's still a world class player. I don't think Madrid are fools to pay £35m for him, more than double his value last season. He's simply a very rare breed of midfielder. Players like him don't grow on trees.Originally posted by carheex View PostWorld class? I think not.
